Smoking from metal: Copper

So I know in general smoking from metals is not as good of an idea as smoking from glass. I have read that smoking from copper is a bad idea. I was wondering just how bad it is for you based on amount of exposure and what specific short term and long term effects it can have on you. I would prefer if the post could include a reliable source linked to it. Ive looked and all I find is copper=Bad with no specific details.

Also is brass a safe alternative? Ive heard titanium is a good alternative but, this is very hard to come by. If any body has a good, reliable, cheap or easy idea to obtain just a titanium plate please share. I've heard that titanium sporks are a pretty good source.

Im asking more specifically form honey butane oil applications like a Ti pad

I've seen copper oxidize with butane jet lighters, and we've all seen green copper roofs which is proof enough that smoking with it will probably find some metal in your lungs.

While a Ti pipe would be very high in badassness, you'd be better off with aluminum which wont melt or oxidize for thousands of degrees.

Keep in mind that copper and aluminum are the two most conductive metals of heat, so they might not be the first choice for an all metal piece.

What are most metal pipes made out of?

I don't use metal pipes, but a lot of my mates do (And people in general around here), but I do use the cone pieces in home made bongs.

Is this safe?

Stainless steel I'd imagine (chrome and iron)

Chances are that even if it was made of lead solder the outside layer would be oxidized and coated in resin so much that it wouldn't matter anymore.

Assuming you guys aren't all smoking home made bowls out of whatever oily metal you had laying around you should be fine, especially if it came from any kind of respectable store.

Seeing as a lighter flame is not going to be hot enough to melt or vaporize copper, aluminum, steel, or any other kind of metal you'd make a pipe out of, I would not concern yourself too much. There are no known safety hazards when it comes to smoking out of metal pipes.

Many pipes are made from Brass right?

My first pipe, and my first piece of smoking paraphernalia was a small brass pipe, shit i loved that thing, was pretty smooth but it got thrown out when i lent it to a friend and her mum found it.

:(

It's impossible also to vaporize brass with a lighter.

You need a forge or something.

You ought to look in a dictionary or encyclopeedia, something of that nature for a table.
I saw a table in an encyclopedia w/ a table of colored flames that metals put off.

You don't need to melt or vaporize metal for it to be harmful. Some metals like iron and copper can oxidize and come loose under even room temperature and below.

Fire produces hot water vapor which is being forced onto the metal when you inhale, creating a more than ideal method for oxidation. I'm sure everyone is familiar with the rust associated with copper and iron...do you really want to risk getting that into your lungs from a fresh pipe?

most copper is treated with an antioxidant coating, and that shit is definitely not safe to smoke so keep the water tubing in your house out of homemade herb pieces. it's safer to just stick with papes when buying a proper piece isn't an option.

...would'nt recommend it, having absolutely no facts to back it up. It just seems as thought the vapors it would emit, wouldn't be a good idea to inhale....especially when you can get a decent glass piece from any any smoke shop for pretty cheap.

I smoke out of a bong with a metal slide/bowl. I've smoked out of metal on and off for a few years and besides my lungs being a wreck from cigarettes, I don't think it has done any significant harm. Not scientifically positive though

I know a very close person to me that 1 out of 3 times he will smoke out of a metal pipe.. I would rather he would smoke out of Glass or Papers! He is very stubborn! :p

I have a brass pipe...made from a 7.62x51NATO cartridge that was used in earnest in battle...I smoke from it now and then, and notice no ill effects/mettalic taste from it.

If its something your using for the bad ass factor/sentiment value, and only use it now and then, I dont see too much harm from it. Tho I wouldnt be toking mad bowls daily from anything but wrought iron or titanium.

Wrought iron being iron/carbon which is generally not harmful, and titanium being fairly inert.

"Copper must be absorbed in small amounts on a daily basis to maintain good health. A daily dietary intake of 1-2 milligrams is required. However, high levels of copper can be harmful to health. Inhaling high levels can cause irritation to the nasal passages, mouth, eyes and throat, and ingesting high copper concentrations can lead to nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Exposure to very high levels can damage the liver and kidneys and may lead to death. The Office of the Australian Safety and Compensation Council classifies copper as a hazardous substance."

Verdigris (the green shit you see on oxidised copper contains a cyanide compound, and that shit isn't healthy. Don't bother with copper.
