From the outset, let me just say that I know alot of people will look at this title and scoff.... However, I did enter into this little experiment with a "nothing to lose except my pink, healthy lungs" attitude. I was very aware that this had the potential to be a pointless exercise, and the effects that I got may have been placebo.
I am moderately experienced with opiates, being well versed with oxycodone, morphine, codeine and dihydrocodeine. I am also quite experienced with a range of psychedelics, stimulants and sedatives.
Let me also just say that all poppies mentioned here were found growing naturally in the wild.
Recently, I have been spending alot of time learning as much as I can about papaver somniferum (Ye Olde Opium Poppy) and the various methods of ingestion people use to get at the goodies it produces. One question that seems to crop up on the net several times is: "Do poppy sprouts contain any appreciable levels of alkaloids?" - and it never has been answered to my satisfaction.
Some people have reported effect from having eaten a bunch of sprouts, whereas just as many people have denied it works at all. Apparently, the root of the poppy plant contains the highest concentration of alkaloids, after the pod...and so, having come across this dubious, unverified piece of information, I decided to smoke a bunch of poppy sprouts. (I suppose it is worth mentioning at this point that I have tried eating sprouts, on two occasions, and the little jury in my head seems to be out on whether there were any effects. The first time I thought I could feel it, the second time I didn't think I could feel anything. On both occasions I ate only about 40 sprouts... so this may have been too few sprouts.)
I spent some time drying out a handful (somewhere in the vicinity of 100) of 1 - 2 month old sprouts. The sprouts were about 4 inches in length (including the root). Once fairly dry (there was still a bit of dampness in some of them - I'm an impatient bugger) I roughly mulled them up with some cigar tobacco and proceeded to smoke them out of a rustic tobacco pipe. The final amount of dried poppy had condensed into a small tangled mess about the size of two cigarette lighters side by side (sorry, I'm having trouble coming up with a universal unit of measurement).
It wasn't enjoyable smoking. I don't smoke anymore (maybe the occasional cigar on a special occasion) and I'd forgotten how harsh smoking plant out of a pipe was. It was tough going, but after 30 mins (and much spitting) I'd put all of it in my lungs - all up I think I'd packed the pipe about 4 - 5 times, and the pipe had a deep bowl.
By this point I was thinking that the whole thing had been a complete waste - there didn't seem to be any effects that couldn't be explained by the tobacco and the standard "I've just smoked a plant feeling" (if you've ever smoked one of those 'legal' herbal blends you'll know what I'm talking about). So I got in the car to go and do some stuff that I needed to do.
As soon as I got in the car I felt I bit different. Just a little bit chilled, a little bit comfy, a little bit relaxed and mellow - nothing dramatic. The feeling lasted about 3 hours. If I had to talk or walk around a bit the feeling would subside, and when I sat back down again it came back. I also found myself getting irritable - a classic sign for me that I'm on opiates.
If anything it felt like a low dose of dihydrocodeine - except that the feeling was more pronounced in the periphery of my body than in my chest. If I had to equate the dose, I would say it was comparable to maybe 35mg of dihydrocodeine or 60-90mg of codeine (these are 'just noticeable' threshold doses for me).
So, was it worth it? I'd probably say no... but I am prepared to try it again, perhaps waiting to dry the material a bit more and then smoking it without any tobacco through a bong.
For the record, I would say that poppy sprouts do contain a (barely) appreciable level of alkaloids. Whether this is a good use of sprouts or not, it depends on how potent your poppies are and how much you enjoy smoking.
Peace out
