i'm surprised these aren't discussed more. there are so many smart drugs and nutrients out there- my question is which ones have you got a kick out of? to throw just a few names out there:
phosphatidylcholine(pc)
pyroglutamic acid(pca)
dmae/acetylcholine
vasopressin
spirulina/amino acids (e.g. l-tyrosine, l-glutamic acid?)
B vitamins (e.g. vit b6 or the far more potent pyridoxal-5-phosphate)
of course there are many others....

"smart drugs" are drugs that are thought to increase your mental powers such as intelligence, memory, concentration and ability to learn. some of these drugs (e.g. pyroglutamate) are naturally occuring in the human brain. some work on your central nervous system, others (i.e. nootropics) have no or very little cns stimulation (according to the book 'smart drugs and nutrients'). some say these drugs are the way forward (check out "the hedonistic imperative" website). of course some vitamins and amino-acids (i.e. the building blocks of protein) may be thought of as "smart drugs". to what extent you can get high of these i'm not too familiar with but i've tried smart-drug combos (designer stimulants) that i've got a buzz from. of course there are different senses (strengths) of the word 'high'

Ive been taking nootropics for the past few months and im seriously surprised this isnt a more talked about subject.
Vinpocetine increases the transfer of information between the corpus collosum (that bit of wiring down the middle of the brain that connects the hemispheres and allows them to communicate)by up to 4X.
During my finals, i had to do some hardcore studying for math. That evening i went over 13 chapters in a 8 hour period and memorized EVERY FORMULA. The next day in class ( i took more before the test) i could read the formulas off the mental pictures and recite them to the prof. because she was asking for certain ones. she was surprised herself and so was I.... anyway i got every problem correct, big fucking deal, but still this isnt something that happens to me everyday. i get good grades and i have a good memory but never THAT good!...i like the feeling they give me as well. i get this accelerated feeling in the frontal lobes and i get slightly nauseas. It sounds cheesy but it feels kinda like coming up on E....alirght, anyone else take nootropics?
peace

mescalito, after reading your account of vinpocetine i'm definately gonna have to try it.
hopfully someone who has tried nootropics and "smart drugs" can give some more input here.
smart drugs (which incidently includes caffeine) ironically may have the opposite effect (i.e. "dumb drugs"!) when taken in excess. but it may be good for a buzz. also you may get some pretty beneficial effects from normal use.

i've tried various nootropics on and off for the last 15 years, with various degrees of efficacy.
the most consistent has been piracetam, aka nootropil, works really well and is synergistic with most anything. after about 2 weeks of use, about 1500 mg/day, i noticed i could remember people's phone numbers without having to write them down - something extraordinary, givem my predilection for cannabis.
piracetam increases the brain's utilization of glucose and also affects the left-right hemisphere communication across corpus colossum. since starting to take it about a month ago, my fiancee has been memorizing Rachmaninoff piano sonatas in a single sitting.
vasopressin intranasally works quickly to clear the mind, but is a hard body load, especially for the kidneys, and is fairly hard to come by.
Choline/DMAE/lecithin etc i find to much of a pain in the ass to ingest for the effects they produce, which also take a long time to manifest - some people swear by them though.
personally, i find nothing starts the day like the following, perhaps not such a "smart" combination: 500 mg l-phenylalanine, 500 mg l-tyrosine, 2-3 cups strongass coffee, 1600 mg piracetam, 3 bongloads of Australia's finest...

I swear that Gingko and SIberian Ginseng work. Problem with nootropics is that there isn't really any recreational value (unless you consider Kava which is questionable). I use a daily and creatine for lifting but other than that I would say caution is needed.
