sleep

I've been trying for the last 4 hours and I just can't sleep. I can't seem to turn my mind off. The sneezing and coughing every 2 minutes isn't helping much either. :X

I took 2mg of kpin and that isn't helping either. I better start getting yawny soon. This is getting old. :|

I used to have big problems with insomnia until I got my sleep hygiene up to snuff. Some tricks that I found helped:

- Slowly count backwards from 100. If a thought intrudes, let it have its moment, then start over. I've found that forcing thoughts to the side tend to make them more persistent.
- Lie still, and start relaxing all the muscles in your body. Start with your little toe, and work your way up. If you can get past your waist and you're still up, something else is going on or you're not fully relaxing the muscles before moving to the next one.
- Read something dull enough to make you bored, but not so dull that you won't bother reading it. For me, organic chem texts worked well, but ymmv.

Good sleep hygiene works best though. Go to bed at roughly the same time each night. Do nothing in bed but sleep and sex. Try to figure out when your circadian cycle is at it's minimum (or reset it using melatonin), and go to bed then. If you're not asleep, or nearly asleep, after a half hour, get up and walk around. Basically you want to make it so that your bed is associated in your mind only with sleep, so that when you lie down in it you will fall asleep faster.

Good luck. There's nothing quite as miserable as chronic sleep dep.

Have you tried some antihistamines, like diphenhydramine? It'll make you stop sneezing and also maybe, hopefully make you drowsy. *Wishes and hopes you sleep soon!*

Be careful with those. Even antihistamines can develop a tolerance and the rebound insomnia that comes after taking them regularly and then stopping is considerably worse than regular insomnia IME.

Well, it's helped me during those ocassional times when I had a super stuffy itchy nose . It's not like I get addicted to it.

Yeah, it's great for occasional insomnia, but I've seen people who take it daily for insomnia. Hell, I've been people who've taken it daily for insomnia. Not a good idea.

That's what I meant. I just recommended it to help relieve her itchy nose AND hopefully that would help her sleep too, in this instance. I never advocated daily use duh :)

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think it was mainly being sick that was keeping me up, but I'm feeling much better now! :)

When are you going to start a blog, Dave? :)
