“We cane the patients on the buttocks with a clear and definite medical purpose – it is not some warped sado-masochistic activity,” Professor Marina Chukhrova told The Siberian Times. Apparently, there are some sound scientific principles behind these beatings. Chukhrova and fellow practitioner Dr German Pilipenko claim addicts suffer from a lack of endorphins, known as the “happiness hormones”, and the excruciating pain stimulates their brains to release endorphins into the body, making them feel better about themselves without having to use any other stimulants. “The caning counteracts a lack of enthusiasm for life which is often behind addictions, suicidal tendencies and psychosomatic disorders,” Pilipenko says. He admits their technique gets a lot of skepticism from fellow doctors, but insists the pain acts as an injection against stress.

The Siberian Times reporters had a chance to observe a couple of caning sessions involving a drug user and an alcoholic. Young Natasha was introduced to drugs by a boyfriend who was since killed by the habit, and says the controversial treatment saved her life. She receives 60 lashes per session. “With each lash I scream and grip tight to the end of the surgical table. It’s a stinging pain, real agony, and my whole body jolts. Often I cry, and the doctor sometimes asks what I am feeling, and if I am ok,” she says. “My body gets really hot and my palm starts sweating. It’s really unpleasant – but after each session, I can see that it works. In fact, it’s the only thing that has worked for me. The pain helps me understand the dangers I have caused to myself, how I was simply killing myself.”

It would at least partly explain why acupuncture works for addiction too, though I'd prefer acu to being caned on the ass.

i dont think you can really compare the two.... acupuncture shouldnt hurt....

this is straight s & m lol and i suppose most addicts and alcoholics are masochists at heart anyway.... just getting their endorphin fix in another way...

so they beat you so badly you say i want to live and not do drugs! this sounds a little far fetched. accupuncture is one thing, getting caned is brutal.

This is reminiscent of some people with drug addictions moving on to self-harm for their endorphine rush.

Not sustainable or healthy, but if you're into S&M I'm not going to stop you.

that actually makes a lot of sense.

The caning counteracts a lack of enthusiasm for life which is often behind addictions

Right, because those who are caned, or whipped, often immediately develop a great enthusiasm for life (when asked if they would rather be caned again or show some enthusiasm).

And, to respond to an earlier comment by echoing a slightly later comment, acupuncture should not be part of this discussion, as it shouldn't hurt.

I dunno, it seems to border on malpractice in so far as (I google scholared it) there is no scientific consensus on any of the points made in this article re: the mechanism or effectiveness of this.

How about supervised low (non-recreational doses) injections of ketamine on a schedule to help with somethings like depression, or certain addictions.

Re: acupuncture... I'm an acupuncturist, and you're right it shoudn't hurt. Also, the reason for it working is beyond modern science's understanding. There is always a basic level endorphin release with treatment though, which was the aspect I was comparing but didn't really elaborate on!

I feel like much drug use is spurred by a desire for masochism mixed with narcissism. Beatings would be the former with justification for the latter.

How can you have any pudding, if you don't beat your meat? I mean eat your meat. I say leave the cane far away from my buttocks please. If I wanted pain and suffering, I would cold turkey it every 3 months just for shits and giggles....8o
