Long story short, things got out of hand real fast once I got prescribed to 1lmg xanax every night. It just made all of my problems go away for a little while. Tolerance grew and within 8 months I was taking 12mlgs at a time at least once a day. One night about a month ago I took my 12mlg and ended up drinking at least a fifths worth of alcohol. I only weigh 150 and from what I understand, I shouldn't have woken up that next morning but I was just fine, didn't black out or anything. I went to the doctor that same day and told them about my problem and started my detox immediately to get this out of my life and its been going well. Anyway...I was just wondering, and I could be way off, but haven't people died from a lot less?

I'm not an "expert", but I believe it's when opiates are added (because they cause respiratory depression) that people really get into trouble. The same opiate dose alone makes you high. Combine with benzos and alcohol. ..Russian roulette. Unpredictable, possibly deadly results.

But good for you for getting off benzos! It will be much easier now than later! !!

Glad you're alive. Luckily benzos+alcohol have a better safety profile than barbiturates do (RIP Jimi Hendrix a.k.a God) but that does NOT mean it is safe to mix them.

It sounds like you had a huge tolerance, which probably acted as a bit of a buffer. The problem that arises from mixing benzos with alcohol is the interaction at binding sites & potentiation (sic) of effects at certain binding sites. With a large tolerance, that potentiation and overall effects would be less. I've taken upwards of 30mg of benzos daily before with a buddy. My buddy however also added some alcohol into the mix. I was on the computer...he was asleep. He wakes up, pees all over his bed and bathroom floor, falls face first into the glass of his shower wall, and passes back out covered in piss. He wasn't very happy the next morning... and that was from a very small amount of alcohol mixed.

Still, I'm surprised you weren't at least in a short coma. Don't do that again
