Hi everyone. I am a neuroscientist interested in finding ways to make MDMA safer. One of the things I'm working on is trying to understand "loss of magic" and tolerance, especially why they happen and whether they can they be prevented. One small part of this project is trying to understand how different patterns of dosing influence how long the MDMA session lasts.

If you've used MDMA enough times that you know how it typically affects you, it would be helpful if you filled out this short, anonymous questionnaire. Depending on your answers, it can be as long as 21 questions, but for most people it will be closer to 5 questions.

I have some special questions for people who've injected MDMA and for those who've taken MDMA while they were on an antidepressant. So if that's you, please consider answering the questionnaire.

Or if you've simply used MDMA enough times to know how it typically affects you, your answers will also be super helpful.

Thanks for your help! And feel free to post any questions or comments you have.

@MBaggott Do you feel that once the magic is lost is permanently lost, or do you feel it is possible to return to a pre-tolerance state?

My working hypothesis is that there are multiple mechanisms of tolerance with some more easily recoverable than others. Animal studies suggest to me that permanent tolerance might happen with extreme dosing patterns, but it's hard to say how often people achieve those levels of extremism.

How do you define an extreme dosing pattern? Or, maybe a better way to ask that is: what do you personally feel is an extreme dosing pattern?

If there is anything you can recommend for long-term MDMA users to try in regards to tolerance?

Well, if this proves to be true then I'm never going to lose the magic! Huzzah!

By the way, I posted a visualization of preliminary results over on reddit:

Just about to fill in the survey, but the first question was 'how many times have you taken MDMA?' How the hell are us old heads supposed to remember shit like that?

I've lost track of how many times this year, never mind the last 30 years...

I think there should be an option for 'too many times to remember' rather than having to input a number.

Ya I can’t recount the number of times I’ve dosed either lol 16 years of rolling this year and the first few were really heavy and it’s slowly tapered since

I haven’t answered yet but I think that tolerance concerns may be complicated by today’s mehdma ... as I’ve taken years off/with very sparing use and now with quality stuff the magic is back, to some degree, but it’s def less so with meh

Asking for these kinds of numbers is always a difficult decision in drug use surveys. If we do not get a number, it limits the sensitivity of our statistical analyses. But asking for a number adds noise to some people's responses. I usually expect people to make their best estimate and often say so in the instructions.

There are "calendar look-back" methods for going through the calendar month-by-month from first use to the present, which yield surprisingly accurate estimates, but these are not appropriate for short online questionnaires.

Thanks for participating. I've turned off the survey since we hit 600 responses and will begin analyzing the data next week.
