Opioids Shooting 4 mg hydromorphone with a 20 G needle?

Okay, so I have a few questions:
1st: I got my hands on a needle with a built in filter. The cap says MONOJECT 305, 20x1-1/2W/5um FILTER. It also says "not for hypodermic injection."
Would it be safe to do an IV injection with this large of a needle? If I does use this needle, should he take certain precautions, like injecting slowly, etc? Is there a certain vein I should inject into?
Since the needle already has a filter, do I need to filter the substance with a cotton anyways, just to be safe? If so, how would I go about using a cotton ball to filter the substance?
How much water would be used with a 4 mg pill? Does the water need to be hot, warm or cold?
Thank you.

1) we do not SWIM. We all know it's you and this offers you no legal protection. Read the BLUA and OD guidelines in my signature.

2) Do NOT use a 20 gauge needle for injection purposes, especially if it says so explicitly not to.... common sense.

3) 1mL of COLD water is more than enough.

4) Use the cotton to filter first, then the micron filter you have. Please read the Micron Megathread for information on how to filter.

oops =p
anyways i was wondering if hypodermic injections were different from intravenous injections.

an IV is a hypodermic injection. Do not use a 20 gauge needle, that is absolutely huge, bigger than what they use at the hospital lab when taking blood samples.

I just fixed your post for you and got rid of swim.

thank you. also, can i use an intradermal needle used for TB skin testing? I'm not sure of the guage or length, but it's small for sure. its very short, maybe 1/2 or 1/4 inch needle. Is it too short to inject with?

Just for your information, last time I went to the pharmacy to buy syringe and they asked me which size of the hole I wanted I didn't know what to answer and I all I knew was that (29) was too small I wanted bigger, they said the higher the number the smaller the hole in the needle is so I said I'll try (22).

Bad mistake... the needle was 1 1/2 long when the TERUMO needle I normally use are only 1/2 and the hole was just ENORMOUS.... After my VERY PAINFULL injection I removed the needle and it created an OCEAN of blood that I had to use 2 big cotton ball to swipe... NEVER EVER AGAIN I'll try to inject with a gauge any less than (25).... I returned the 9 (22) needles I bough and bough 1/2 (27) instead... ALOT better... just remembering it makes me shiver!

My question for tricomb is... is it all gauge with lower gauge size than (20) that are harmfull for intravenous injection?

And Intravenous Injection and hypodermic Injection are EXACTLY THE SAME or it it different in some way?

hypo = below
dermic = pertaining to the skin, so I guess it is the same. I wasn't sure on that one either. I had an idea, but I wanted to doubble check. I looked online and there are different categories of hypodermic injections, IV being one of them.
I would also assume that a smaller guage is safer because
1. a larger guage can cause damage.
2. a larger guage would inject more medicine at a faster rate and blow a vein.

Again, I just had to ask to double check and I wanted to know if its something i would absolutely not want to do because it was the only thing i had on hand, but I will either go with a TB syringe or an insulin syringe (I think the TB syringe I have is very similar to an insulin syringe, just a shorter needle.)

20 guage is either a horse needle or a needle for drawing up from ampoules.

DO NOT use it for IV.

I personally never go below 29 guage for IV.

I'm glad you came to double check! That's what we're here for, harm reduction. Always come here and ask first, especially if you're having doubts. Doubts are your conscience reminding you of common sense!

yes, just to reiterate Tricomb's comments, 20 Gauge is way to huge to be used for intravenous injection. A rig that big's needle might even be wider than the vein that you plan on injecting into, and even if it's not, it will cause damage to the vein. Personally, I would never use something bigger than 27 gauge, and if your injecting into your hands or wrists, use a 30-31 gauge.

Hah, a 20 gauge is fucking massive. You mine as well just cut a whole in your arm and dump the drugs in, for christ's sake. I normally use 28 or 29 gauge. The 30's and up clog too easily, but they are nice for injecting into your hands.

Sadly, My veins are deep and very hard to access....nurses in the ER sometimes take a half an hour before they get an iv in me. Anyways, I go to amazon.com and get really cheap single use leur lock syringes. its only like $15 for 100. I use them along with a micron filter and vials of sterile water to IM my 4mg dilaudids. I used to get 8mg ones, but oh well i will see my doc in 2 weeks and ask him if he can increase it, im also on opana er 30 3x/day. I've never tried to IM an opana ER, only the 10 IRs. the first time i did it i felt it instantly, not bad for IM eh? but i dont know what the deal with my tolerance is....24mg IM dilaudid made me nod out, but next time it took 6....time after that i tried 10 and did nothing....did 6 more and nothing....did 4 opana IRs....definitely pain relief...but i only felt like i had taken an ambien or something =(....why does tolerance skyrocket so fast like that?

^ I just spent 40 minutes at the exchange, trying to get the nurse to take blood for a Hep test. She couldn't do it.

@OP A TB syringe and insulin syringe are basicly the same thing. They have smaller volume notches but, for the most part, are interchangeable for an illicit drug users needs.

If you're in the US and any state besides DE or NJ, goto Walmart and ask for a 10 pack of generic 28ga 1/2cc 1/2" length syringes. That's a good general purpose size & only $2 + tax.
As everyone has said, a 20 gauge will be painful and cause damage.

Intradermal refers to a type of injection (not the syringe itself) where the goal is to empty the contents between the skin. An "intradermal" syringe can also give an "intravenous" injection. Hypodermic refers to the fact that the drugs are administered "under the skin".
