Why do we continue to make broad statements about the opposite sex?

Why do we have masculinism and feminism?

Is it a rare "commodity" to see the wants and needs of all others as similar to your own?

Because men have penises and girls have vaginas. Now, there are generally true statements about less biological things, and until the populous changes and there is evidence against said notion, it will continue.

Why do we have masculinism and feminism?
Because these are 2 things that do exist. You can have masculine women and feminine men, and there's nothing wrong with that, even if you eradicate the label it won't change the reality.

Well, I'm not sure about commodity, and I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean the desires themselves, or the importance of them?
Furthermore, what does gender have to do with it?

Hope you can clarify so I can say a bit more, not that I really care or will add anything.

I did specify sex and not gender!

I speak questions against the overwhelming majority of people biased against the opposite sex.

If you are a woman, does it offend you when men say, "all women are sluts"?. It offends me when people make broad statements.

The third question is asking if it's rare for people to see the opposite sex as being similar to themselves. We all want love, peace and happiness in some way or another.

I was just studying this in one of my courses actually. Cameron talks about how women are quite often defined as 'having no penis' (with Freud for instance), thus making them the opposites of men and completely ignoring the fact that women do indeed have sex organs of their own. Just an example to show that it's a bit dumb to consider men and women as opposites. According to Cameron it comes from Ancient Greece where everything was conceptualized in terms of various binary oppositions; plus since then and for a very long time woman was always the 'weaker' one in the opposition, no matter what she was attributed though (eg even in metaphorical gender she would come out as weaker).

I think it offends anyone if broad statements are made against their gender. Dunno why we still do it. I probably do it myself sometimes without realizing.

Life is a duality. Two polar opposites.

Night, day.

Left, Right.

Back, front.

Good, evil.

White, black.

Yin, yang.

Time, space.

Feminine, Masculine.

Personally I think the patriarchal society we all suffer is due to a massively deep-seated jealousy complex rooted in the fact that women give life. Men cannot, though now that we have a better understanding that you can't have dark with light, I think we may be ready to evolve back to a partnership society.

Doesn't mean it will happen, but there are hopeful signs.

Because in a lot of cases it's massively overblown. Everytime I go to my dad's I have to hear about how she is the only woman in the office, isn't respected, blah de blah de blah. I completley advocate equality in the workplace and at home... I don't enjoy the constant moaning about it... Peter Tatchell often erks me with his blind push for equality which is quite often laughable in it's intent. Get the Queen to "acknowledge gay and tranvestites in Britiain!". Why?

Because every stereotype starts from a truth. Besides we're different. I don't find any offense when someone points out a common chick thing. It's either true about me or not.

I definitely agree with you.

Same goes for me as a guy.

I don't see a lot of the isms people complain about. If anything, everywhere I've worked we'd make fun of each other's race and gender.

Like it or not there are big differences between the sexes, and people have a tendency to want to categorize things in order to make sense of the world. Of course no stereotypes will be true 100% of the time, but I dont see sexism ever going away.

Some sexist stereotypes that I think are, for the most part, true.

Women are more empathetic than men.

Men are better at making things with their hands.

Women are more patient.

Men are more aggressive.

Men are more competitive.

Men are better drivers than women.

Women have better handwriting.

ect ect ect

I notice all these trends in people based on their gender. However I do my best to not judge anyone that I dont know until I can attempt to make an accurate judgement based on their behavior. It is entirely possible that any given guy will be less aggressive or a worse driver than any given woman. Danika Patrick is definitely a much better driver than 99% of teenage boys for instance.

I think that is the best way to approach stereotypes, because simply denying they exist is blinding yourself to reality.

I really dont get why some people get so offended about stereotypes...... as long as its not done in a condescending way, or a stereotype for negative behavior.

Gender and sex are two different things. Physiologically, there are differences between the sexes. Gender is a sociological construct that people apply roles and duties to, such as woman are more empathic, men are more aggressive, etc. People will cite generalized examples of how sexist statements are true, but they are easy to refute by going outside of that person's culture and providing examples of other places in the world where attitudes are different.

Sexism is when sex and gender are conflated. It's when people attach a sociological phenomenon to a fixed sex. In reality, anyone can exist at any given place on the gender spectrum.

Most of the modern world is yet to make the important ideological leap that everyone contains masculine and feminine within them in varying degrees and balances, and their physicality has nothing to do with it. Of course, this is just replacing a visible duality with a more philosophical one. The end game should be that people are just people and they can come in any form or demeanor.

Most of the bullshit rules about gender are thanks to the patriarchy.

I'm not sexist, but when I see a woman driving I get out of the way.

I do enjoy the occasional women can't drive jokes, but I'm pretty sure women as a whole statistically are less accident prone than men (atleast in people 16-25, but probably true for other age ranges as well).

52% of Americans are female so the probability of driving near a female is quite likely and you should either abandon yput stupid patriarchal machine to charity or get the fuck off the road.

We get hurt by the opposite sex and lash out.

This doesn't speak to the part about "patriarchy" which is essentially a political concept... but a lot of women hate men as much as a lot of men hate women

What's up your ass? Got played by some guy recently? Or is this just how you talk to everyone after a bad day at work?
