I started a daily dose of 50mg of sertraline and I always planned on tapering off my doses after 4-6 months or so. Since then my GP has told me that I have to stay on it for a minimum of 9-12 months as if I stop taking it I run the risk of suffering from a rebound depression. My instincts tell me this is a load of rubbish and that she just wants me to stay away from recreational drugs (which I haven't stop taking). Can anyone tell me whether or not this is true?

You don't have to stay on it as long as your doctor told you. I have no idea why your doctor would tell you information that is blatantly false, but then again, a lot of doctors aren't all that well educated.

I don't see how taking an anti-depressant for a short amount of time would cause MORE rebound depression than taking it for a longer time. I think you're right and its just a lie with good intentions.

Just because I'm a drug user, she thinks I'll believe any lie she tells me. Well this is the same doctor that told me not to cut myself because it doesn't look very nice.

I have been on Zoloft (sertraline) for almost a year and in the last month my doctor has been weening me off it, 50mg per week reductions. I am currently on 25 mg. I feel fine! I was at 200mg a day when I started tapering. I feel fine. So I don't know why your doctor has told you about rebound depression? but try to find another doctors opinion. As I am not qualified to give medical advice. let us know.
