I had some questions about serotonin syndrome.

  • Is it possible to happen on one dose of a drug? (MDMA, Meth ect..., if so, how likely?)
  • What if Adderall, Meth, DXM or other similar drugs are in your system before you dropped a roll? Risks increased?

I would like a further explanation of what truly puts you at risk for this problem.

A lot of people think "serotonin syndrome " is some sort of catch all that is just a Bad Thing on Drugs. What it really is, is an excess of serotonin being released into your body causing it to freak out and go hyperthermic.

The general recipe for serotonin syndrome is a powerful releasing agent (MDMA, tramadol, meth) mixed with a reuptake inhibitor or MAOI (that prevents the decompoisition of serotonin, like say DXM or moclobemide). Mixing several reyuptake inhibitors or releasing agents can trigger it too.

Unless you take a stupendous overdose of a single drug (many grams MDMA) you're not going to get Serotonin Syndrome but mixing powerul reuptake inhibitors, or huge doses of drugs (e.g. antidepressants) can cause it.

It's worthwhile noting that the reason you shouldn't mix, say, Adderall and DXM is because of a similar thing happening with another neurotransmitter, norepinpehrine. When too much norepinephrine is released and cannot be broken down, your hrart rate and blood pressure can rise to dangerous levels and it very frequently induces massive panic attacks (norepinephrine is a "fight or flight" horomone). The same "recipe" works here, releasing agent plus something that stops breakdown.

are brain zaps close to seratonin syndrome?

Don't rely on me but to my knowledge, brain zaps are a symptom of SS when the brain is trying to 're-wire' itself. Seratonin plays a crucial role in almost every area of the brain. Messed up seratonin = messed up life.

@sekio,
Is tramadol really that much of a releasing agent? I never found it THAT euphoric and amazing as to place it next to mdma. I would prefer hydro if I got the chance in regards to opiates, but, tram also has some SSRI effects if im not mistaken?

"Brain zaps" are a symptom of fucked up serotonergic activity either caused by too much or too little serotonin production (as seen in SSRi withdrawal).

It is an overgeneralization to say that serotonin release = euphoric drug. Tramadol is a wierd combination releaser and reuptake inhibitor if I remember correctly.
