Sense of humor and drugs

Hey BLers,

I'll cut this short - essentially, can empathogenic drugs help to gain a sense of humor. I don't really laugh at all (despite being extremely unserious and in no way mature and 'boring') likely due to a stressful upbringing, and I want to know if certain drugs can PERMANENTLY (and not just while high on the drug) make you laugh more at things (and also, whether sense of humor can be acquired in general). On weed I'm super giggly, but I feel it's semi-forced - not that I fake it, but I can stop laughing at any time (so it's sort of controlled laughter).

Cheers \m/

Some one help this person! That would be terrible...I was in a bad wreck when I was young. Which damaged the nerves on one side of my face. Long story short...was made fun of a couple of times and trained myself not to smile...
Not being able to laugh or smile is fuckwd up not matter if its physical or psych.

If you don't mind talking to yourself and inadament objects just do a lot of LSD. Pretty sure you laugh then but not in an appropriate way. Just a joke BTW, I wouldn't really recommend doing copious amounts of L as this is a harm reduction site. My twisted sense of humor coming into play.

I don't know if anything would give you a sense of humor while not doing them. Maybe you need to be on anti depressants ,some kind of mood elevator.

I know if you get hooked on drugs and quit they can take away your sense humor and your ability for any kind of joy!

One more thing is usually a sense of humor is you have one or you don't,I don't think you can gain one.

It truly depends on the drugs you're taking. Personally, I enjoy hallucinogens and have found that when perception is altered, I find things funny that I wouldn't normally. Shrooms gives me the most childlike view of things. That being said, while on the drugs definitely. But as for your question, I do believe some can alter your hormone levels, even elevating the levels of dopamine, and serotonin in the brain. From what I've read, and I can direct you to the links, there have been studies recently on the effects of hallucinogens on the brain. Some subjects even reporting better moods and happiness fourteen months after a single dose. So yes, it's highly possible. Drugs alter your brain in many ways, even rewriting a few things. For instance, stimulants cause massive amounts of dopamine to be emitted in the brain which in return causes a high. But after effects show significant depression, due to a lack of hormones left to emit. The chemistry of drugs and their reactions with your brain are very interesting, and I highly suggest you look into it to have a better understanding of the drugs you're taking. I personally, find most things in life quite humorous and find weed makes me very uncontrollably giggly at everything. Everyone is very different.

I kind of have the same problem. I'm always quiet and have a serious look on my face and its not intentional. People have literally told me my heart was made of steel. like WTF!? lol anyways. The only time I really laugh is when I'm on some kind of drug. Mainly weed but thats for most people... You might want to go see a doc and possibly get some expert advise and maybe get on some meds like Queen said. Personally I hate mood elevators and anti-depressants because i think they might make you feel good but in the long run they can make things worse... Or maybe you can try some benzos like xanax, valium, klonapin. They might lighten your mood a little bit and make you laigh and feel a little happier, it works for me...

I think I may know possibly why I never laugh, being similar to what shazammm said: I trained myself never to smile as my dimples mean my smiles look stupid, so maybe I have to untrain myself? That could be an explanation, or perhaps even some form of schizotypy. Atm I'm thinking of taking weed or laughing gas and then laughing as a result, and hopefully if I do that enough I'll teach my brain laughing isn't so bad after years of saying it was.

Like RBF? I've got that too, or whatever the dude version of RBF is lol. People often assume that I'm really serious or angry or unhappy when in reality that's just my resting expression.

Hedontist....it sure has been alot harder to untrain than it was to train...I was 15 when this all started and I am 45 now and still suffer all tho better..

Use a reward system, anytime you smile or laugh at something that happens in the day eat a hershey kiss or something. (Like a dog I know but it trains humans too lol) dont force a laugh or smile, it's not genuine. you want your brain to light up and cause a smile.
