Semaglutide and hydrocodone euphoric effect?

Hi all! New here and I’m hoping I’m posting in the correct spot.
I just started a “Semaglutide journey” this past Thursday. I have also been on hydrocodone for years as I’ve had 4 spinal surgeries in 8 years. 3 of them being 2 years apart.

I noticed after taking my first shot of Semaglutide, I wasn’t necessarily getting the same euphoric feeling as normal. I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience and if so did the euphoric feeling g come back? I felt like my constant back pain was still being relieved, but I just wasn’t “enjoying” it as much.

I have read some articles that have said the Semaglutide slows down the way the stomach processes things. I was thinking that may make my meds last longer? I’ve also seen articles claiming that GLP-1 meds have helped with overdoses.

So has anyone else?

Those GLP-1 drugs do bind to and interact with dopamine receptors, which may effect the euphoria from opioids or other drugs. A major part of opioid euphoria is not from the opioid receptors, but how it releases dopamine downstream as a secondary effect. I would imagine that's what is going on, but the mechanism hasn't really been elucidated yet.

This effect may go away over time, or may actually get worse.

I had typed that before taking my meds today. After I took them, I noticed the euphoric feeling again which was nice. I know it’s probably psychosomatic, but the euphoric feeling does keep my mind off of the back pain.

I also didn’t take any Tagamet with it like I sometimes do just to see if that worked. So it might be a combo of not taking Tagamet & it being 3 days away from my 1st injection?

It’s definitely odd how your brain works with these different chemicals.

There is a bit of research on semaglutide and addiction, but that is primarily in the realm of alcohol addiction. It seems semaglutide both makes drinking less rewarding acutely, while altering addiction circuits resulting in less cravings.

The only thing I could find about semaglutide and opioids after a brief literature search is this paper, which reports that semaglutide patients with type II diabetes and opioid use disorder have fewer opioid overdoses.

Now they don’t get into the mechanism, and off the top of my head, it could be one of these things: Semaglutide could exert anti-addictive effects, causing people to stop using, thereby limiting the opportunity for an overdose. Next, semaglutide could decrease the effects of opioids (which your first experience may point to).

It could also be a combination of these or some third thing yet unmentioned.

Have these effects continued since your first experience?

The euphoric effects have not come back since then, unfortunately. I still take them bc if not, there is a withdrawal. Found that out the hard way.

I am close to my goal weight so I’ll be going on maintenance doses soon. Maybe then, it’ll be long enough between shots that the euphoria comes back.
