Second Opinion - 8 cavities?

I last had a dental checkup 6 months ago. Had one filling done there and it was a small one.

Went to a different dentist this time since I moved in the last 6 months. They told me I had 8 cavities! How is it possible to get 8 cavities in 6 months? I don't do stimulants (often) or smoke anything. The only thing I can think of is that I've insuffalated a bit of mxe lately.

I found an estimate while I was waiting and it was for 8 fillings as well, and I found this on ratemd:

"never had a cavity, [they] tried to tell me I had 8 cavities, 5 of which needed to be done right away. Went to a second dentist who told me I actually had no cavities at all" (paraphrasing).

If it was you would you pay another consultation fee or is mxe really that toxic to teeth?

im not so sure myself!

Be careful dentists are money grabbing people sometimes and they sometimes drill and do more damage than fix.

Im 20, had one milk tooth pulled put and one filled when i was 7.

I havent seen or even felt the need to see one again since Lol
 
Is this a public or private practice?

When i was younger i was always taken to a public dentist; and they always insisted i had multiple cavities.. when my parents finally decided to get a second opinion from a private dentist they said my teeth were fine and were honestly dumbfounded as to why the other dentist suggested i need upwards of 5 fillings. I havn't been to the dentist in a couple of years now.. the last time i was there was when i had all my wisdom teeth removed and even then my teeth as far as cavities were fine. I honestly think we're lead to believe that our teeth aren't as resilient as they actually are..
 
Almost all dentists in Canada are private except for those that work directly for the Government of Canada (Coast Guard, Hospitals, Canadian Forces)

If you want my opinion, it's kind of FUBAR right now, dentists generally make more than doctors in the public health care system and can sell their practices for insane amounts of money when they retire (often .5 - 1 million) and doctors can't.

To see a public dentist in a hospital with no charges the case has to be so bad there is either a current or impending condition with the potential to be fatal. The dentist can actually decide after the procedure to bill you if it wasn't as bad as it looked on the x-ray or whatever.

As suggested, I went to get my second opinion today from a dentist a few family members go to and I am furious! There are two cavities! The other six circled were either specs of bacteria which would only develop into a cavity if I stopped flossing and brushing, or imaginary.

Right now I'm trying to figure out what further action to take. I already missed half a days work, and maybe another two days for the other two issues. My inclination is just to tell the police there is a dentist in the area that may be committing fraud against her patients. I don't think hiring a lawyer would get me anywhere since I didn't let her touch my teeth...
 
Hmm.. thats quite odd. But not entirely as dentists have tried the same on me. They are very dodgey. I think you should contact whoever is incharge of fraud or scams etc in canada.

This happened to me when I was about 16. Had been going to one office for most of of life up until that point, and my parents switched to a new one for whatever reason. I'd had maybe 5 or 6 cavities in my life before that. They told me I had 8 cavities and I was blown away, considering my last appointment was like 6 months before that and I took good care of my teeth. My dad decided I could either pay the premium above his insurance (which ended up being a couple hundred bucks) or we could go to another dentist for a second opinion, and if my teeth were in fact fucked, I'd have to pay for that visit too.

Extremely pissed, I went with the first option and paid for several agonizing sessions of (probably unnecessary) drilling.
 
The thing is with some dentists, they will see your teeth are getting worse and just let it happen, so they can do the work when your teeth are fucked and bill you for a lot more money.... maybe they did that to you but it happens frequently here in the UK

Are you in any pain?
 
crazy. can you ask to see the x-rays and have him point them out to you? if he's bullshitting you it may be obvious if you ask that.
