It's been a while since my last post, but I'm in Indonesia at the moment and figured someone might be interested in my search.
So here's the set up:
A few weeks ago I arrived in Bali, Indonesia to teach English at a local private school. I'll be staying in Gianyar, about 20 minutes from the tourist location of Ubud and maybe 2 hours from Kuta, for 2 months before heading back to America to continue my education.
I'm moderately experienced in various psychedelics, specifically mescaline. Before I headed over here I was doing a lot of research on Ayahuasca. I've seen a couple of sites selling an 'ayahuasca plant' from Bali. The more i try to get more information, the more i'm convinced that they're just trying to make their products sound exotic.
Culturally, I don't think Indonesia has much of a history of psychoactive substances, though mushrooms are pretty popular for tourists (if you're willing to risk the possibility of a decade in prison). Regardless, I've seen bits of info every now and then claiming that Indonesia is home to an ayahuasca brew, and I'm determined to find it.
Everyone worthy of asking about the brew has pretty broken english, so the key words I've been using are 'dukun' (local 'shaman' type individual) and 'caapi' (abbreviation for banisteriopsis caapi). I figure dukuns should know what I'm talking about and caapi should lead me in the right direction
Yesterday I was talking to the man who was driving me to Kuta, and I brought up my search. His english was a little better, so I tried my best to explain the effects of the 'tea'. After a bit of contemplating, he explained that a friend of his was talking about some drink that made you see things 'like a dream'. "but while still awake, yes?" I coaxed. "Yes! like a dream, but still awake". I gave the man my number, and he says he will talk with his friend about the mysterious ayahuasca tea.
I know it's not going to be called ayahuasca here. I told my new friend that the tea (anything ayahuasca related) would be a brownish color and would taste bad.
I have my fingers crossed, and will update when I get any new info for my search.
If anyone has any experiences in Indonesia, please contribute. I really have no idea what MAOIs I should be looking for... and even if i did, what the local names would be.
I've got 2 months, wish me luck!
