I am going to see a psych for depression and anxiety. I want to get something good, but I wana stay as close to the truth as possible since i really do have the problems, just not to the point where i would need benzos. Would it be ok for me to say anything about former drug use or being arrested for drugs in the past, or would that just kill my chances of getting anything (because i think they may have caused some of my depression and i want to get well too)? I have problems sleeping (cant sleep for more than an hour or so straight, i wake up 5-10 times a night) and have already been prescribed paxil, zoloft, and ambien by my doctor. What would be the best way for me to get a benzo from the doctor without lying too much? (dont want my parents or family doctor to think im scripting). I already read Phreex's post on scripting.

How old are you? The reason i ask is its gonna be pretty hard to get yourself a script of benzos if your under twenty, read VERY hard if you want to tell him about your drug use. I reckon you will probably be given a diffrent ssri, they are unlikely to give you benzos for depression.

Dont even hint about past drug use. It's that simple. And if you arent willing to lie chances are you will fail.

I'm going through a similar situation right now. I'm on zoloft now for depression which has pretty much cleared up most of my symptoms, and drug use has never been a factor in it so I am thinking about trying to tack on some benzos.
I am basically gonna tell my doc that my medicine hasn't given me any problems at all, but that several nights a week I am a little too anxious to fall asleep. Also tell him once I fall asleep I stay asleep pretty good, and that I just have trouble getting there.
I think that would be a valid reason to give me a small script for xanax (or similar), maybe like 10-15 pills per month, not trying to be greedy here. Telling him that it doesnt happen every night covers a worry of becoming dependent or trying to change my medication AGAIN.

If you are under 20 you are prolly fucked, unless you have a really liberal doctor or your parents come in and vouch for you. Getting benzos is easy money if you know how to do it. They are perscribed to treat acute anxiety so you go to the doctor claiming anxiety due to some life event (parent died, lost job, doing bad in school, financial problems, marital problems, etc). Dont say 'i've really had anxiety problems my whole life' cuz thats gonna get you stuck on some fucking buspar or something like that. The key is that the severe anxiety is due to some event in your life that is out of the ordinary. The easiest fucking way to get them is if you have panic attacks due to one of the anxiety causing events listed above. For example, right now I am on .5 mg xanax twice a day for my 'panic attacks' heh.

I am 18, and the major event would prob be that i got arrested for possession and got charged with 2 felonies...i doubt thatll help me any with the script tho...what could I say that would help me but not seem far fetched to my parents?

o yea, and i got kicked outta school cuz that happened...duno if that matters, that and im facing a class B and class D felony which could get me up to 25 years in state pris...i doubt that would help if i told the psych tho..

Do a websearch of anxiety disorders and panic attacks. Pick a few of the symptoms and tell your doctor you are experiencing them. Make sure you say you have problems in public areas. Claim you get dizzy and shit. It would help out alot if you acted a somewhat agoraphobic.
If you get stuck with buspar, take it for a few weeks and call your doctor and say it's not helping at all and your really havin some problems.
what could I say that would help me but not seem far fetched to my parents?
Do your parents go with you when you go into to see your psychiatrist? I couldnt imagine that. Anyway, I am guessing they dont and there is no reason for you to even tell them what goes on with you and your shrink.

If you're asking these questions read my post again...
1) Do you mention past drug use? YES you claim that you "smoked pot maybe two times, but I didn't like it in the least, that altered feeling was so abnormal I have no desire to ever return to it, honeslty doc, I don't see how people find that stuff fun" - and thats it for drug use... don't mention your arrest or school...
2) I would say that the paxil/zoloft/whatever works but it causes you too much "nervousness" and "makes me gittery like I drank a bunch of coffee" ..
I have covered this MANY TIMES, please search...
But honestly kid, I would focuson getting yer life back on track before I try to secure a supply of dope from my doctor... clear up your legal troubles and do something about that education thing...

If you gotta go to a shrink then you have some serious issues. I wouldn't go there looking to score some benzo's like Phreex said. Try to get your life back on track first & formost. Most likely your going to get an anti-depressant. If you bitch enough after taking it you may get some benzo's. And most of all don't say you have never done any drugs. Even if you havn't they won't believe you. Just tell them you smoked Pot like Phreex said. I mean hasn't everyone at least once in their lives...

I don't really agree with PhreeXs and NoriegAs advice.
K-Bumps seems to honestly want to treat an underlying anxiety problem. The damn psychiatrists think "talking cures" and SSRIs are effective against anxiety. They are not and in some cases it is a much more severe problem than depression. The benzos are *extremely* effective against short term anxiety.
HOWEVER, the long term efficacy of benzos in anxiety treatment is mixed. In fact some long term studies suggest that they actually caused increased incidence of depression and/or anxiety in those treated (xanax though is actually indicated for some treatment of depression so this might vary significantly depending on the benzo used). I imagine, like all other psychiatric drugs, there are some people for whom long term treatment works and others for which it doesn't.
Also if you are really facing a possible 25 year prison term fuck all that pussy footing around. You need some anxiety relief *now*. You need to be able to make it through the day without worrying about bubba ass fucking you. And a prison doctor sure as hell isn't going to prescribe them...maybe you get to keep taking them though if they are already prescribed...hmm interesting question.
Yes you need to get your life in order. But with the kind of stress you are facing benzos may very well help you do this...hell you need something to relieve anxiety and if you don't get a script you may be more likely to do illegal substances (bad idea in your situation). Just be carefull they can cause depression...if you abuse them and run out of your script withdrawal anxiety is several times worse...and don't let them reduce your inhibitions to the point where you do or say something stupid...you can't afford that now.
You can get benzos without lying. I got 2mg of klon a day (could probably raise this if I tried) being completly truthful and complaining about anxiety issues and the fact that prozac/paxil were unhelpful.
I would like to recomend being completly open with your doctor. It would be hoped for that he would recognize this as a textbook case for prescribing benzos (a temporary incredibly stressful situation). However, doctors are dumb and have a huge phobia about prescribing to anyone with a history of drug use.
What I suggest is the following. Get a psychologist you see regularly and also have a psychiatrist you see for the medicine. If you can't do this with your current doc it is really easy. Just switch to a psychologist and on your first visit tell him about your medications (i.e. that you have prescriptsion for paxil etc..) he will recomend a psychiatrist who works with him so you can get the prescriptions continued. Don't tell the psychiatrist anything about your prior drug abuse or trial...treat him as a medicine dispenser not a therapist (though don't let him know this).
Complain to the psychiatrist about the anti-depressant medications treating depression but making your anxiety worse (if you really don't want to lie say they don't help it and they may be making it worse but the first way is way more likely to work). The psychiatrist is fairly likely to prescribe a concurrent benzo. If this doesn't work you can always try and get switched to wellbutrin and say it works even better but have terrible anxiety.
Tell your psychologist everything (well cept your plan to get benzos). They can't tell your psychiatrist unless they get your consent. Ask for help with your anxiety...even something as straightforward as this stress is really killing me isn't their any way you can just help me get through it. If you don't have a backwards psychologist they very likely will recomend an anxiolytic agent to your psychiatrist. With a psychologists recomendation you are very likely to get your benzos. If they aren't convinced you need them no harm done as they can't tell your psychiatrist :-).

I don't agree with that under 20 shit , if you go there and say the right thing and the doctor is a reasonable one , then you could at least walk out with ativans. I got a year supply at age 19

Well yeah, you might get atavans. but most people who want to scam benzos from their doc want xanax and they dont tend to hand that out to young people, especially men. if you are under 20 and find a doc who will script you xanax, stick with that doc.

so does a psychiatrist do both prescriptions and the psycologist stuff or just the prescriptions...ie is one or the other better to goto?

See this works both ways.
Being as your pretty young K-Bumps, I would do what PhreeX says though. about trying it and not likng the feeling of being out of control or whatever.
But I'm going to cover another part of scripting that someone might find interesting in the future. For all you older [users], it MAY help to mention a past in drug use. ecspecially if your around 25-30 yrs old, telling the doc that you have been on drugs for years in the past, and you now have put those habits to rest and you need something that will actually calm you down and make you at ease with your past, so you can put up with work, crowds, flying for your job etc....
**(this is NOT how I get high but rather it is sometimes fun and something to do on Sunday night)**
when scripting a high at the hospital, I will first mention all my side effects from the drugs they try to push me. Then also mention I have been on pain meds for the past several years, they will run some blood tests usually, but shit, the last time I was waiting for my test I managed to score some ativans because I was so nervous of what the results could turn up(wink, wink). After the tests came back I was given a dilaudid for pain, and they even called me a cab! So having some drug history does help in this case.

Okay, first of all, this thread is filled with nothing but ignorance and assumptions minus one or two responses.
As anyone who has followed any of my posts knows, I have had a LONG history of drug abuse. I had a serious run in with the law. I have been working really closely with my psychiatrist for years. Particularly after I was arrested a few years ago. I was not arrested for a drug charge, but the charges were related to drugs. While awaiting trial, I was having extreme anxiety problems and was given a script for klonopin because I could not function due to panic attacks. After jail I was again having anxiety problems and given a new script for it. I was also given a script for Xanax after an attempt to quit heroin.
There are a couple of points to discuss.
First of all, for those that actually have experience trying to score meds from shrinks that were unsuccessful, I can almost guarantee what went wrong. You can't do it half-ass. You either have to go to a shrink lying to get meds or you have to be there to get help. If you're trying to get help and leave half your life out, it's going to be obvious.
K-bumps, since you really do have problems, it is DEFINANTLY in your best interest to tell your doctor everything that has happened to you. You don't just treat depression and anxiety with medication, you're going to need psychotherapy as well.
The drug use is important because drug use is not a root of problems, yet a symptom of problems.
And of course, your run in with the law is definantly a symptom of other problems. And that's definantly something you should try to figure out and work out.
If you're trying to treat your depression and anxiety, you're going to have to figure out some of the roots of your problems and figure out what things trigger your depression and anxiety and make them worse.
Now, for getting benzos, you probably will have to tell a little white lie or two. If you're still using a lot, it's probably going to have to be a past thing, not a present thing. Say you gave up drugs a month ago. Since then you're having serious anxiety attacks. You get extremely uncomfortable in certain situations. One of the symptoms is hyperventilating. You've had to even duck into the bathroom to avoid embarrassment a few times. Another symptom you get is that you have nervous movements.. you tap your feet a lot or something. It happens more when you're in social situations or when you're very stressed out. And you've been noticing that you've been highly stressed lately and you're almost obsessing about bad stuff that has happened in your life, such as your run in with the law. You think about stuff like that all the time. Say it's becoming a real problem that is affecting you more and more every day and you're wondering if there is something you can do about it because it's getting in the way of doing things with your friends and work. Say you've stopped even hanging out with your friends as much because when they want to do something in public or a bunch of friends you just get too nervous and stressed to deal.
You can also say you've noticed some benefits from the drugs you're on, or if you want to get some of your meds changed, say that they're not helping at all.
If the doctor brings up BuSpar as an option, ask how it works. BuSpar takes a few weeks to begin working. If the doctor leaves that out, then try to ask a question like "will it take a while to start working like the Paxil or Zoloft?". When the doctor says "yes", then say that you really need something that will help you now and mention the friends thing again.
There's also another route you can take if you're trying to legitimately get help but wouldn't mind milking it for all it's worth. See two different people. A psychiatrist for meds that you see maybe once a month or less. And then a psychologist that you see for psychotherapy maybe once a week or every other week. That way you can work things out with the psychologist then just have the psychiatrist for meds you need but also be able to lie and manipulate them.
Now, all these idiots told you to lie about ever using drugs, blah blah blah. The doctors you don't tell that you've used drugs to are the types of doctors that would prescribe you painkillers and such.

where do I find a phychiatrist? I looked in the yellow pages and they only got psycologists..
