So, my fiancée has a hybrid job and he usually just works remote. He’s the breadwinner. And he is now being told that he has to indefinitely go into the office. He’s going to get fired I think. I’m scared.

Oh I’m sorry to hear that. It is good to be prepared, however, worrying about something that may or may not happen doesn’t do anyone any good. Just in case it may be a good time to consider all your options, employment, living expenses, and financial obligations. It is good to do this on occasion anyway.

Keep up with training and education in chosen field and consider other forms of employment for broader job market.

It’s not the end of the world, whatever happens you and your fiancé will get through this.

I know… I’m currently going for my masters degree, and that’s the other concern. Everything is so expensive… I don’t know how we’ll manage if he’s out of a job. I have education. He just got lucky and got a software engineering position without a degree and is making almost $80,000. I make half that with 2 degrees and a counseling certification.

Yeah that’s rough, I worked in human services as drug / alcohol counseling and in mental health before retiring, human services work doesn’t pay much. What are you getting your masters in?

It's sometimes difficult to just fire someone for no reason, depending on industry/location. I've worked in management positions and I can tell you right now, one of the ways companies are reducing staff count without having to pay out redundancy or deal with legal issues is to simply put up difficulty they are entitled to do within the contract. One way they are doing this currently is pulling staff from WFH positions back into the office. I know one person recently this happened to. There wasn't even enough desks to facilitate all the staff coming back because they had downsized the office when they implemented WFH during covid. It became so painful just to do work, literally sharing desks, crowded lunch rooms with no fridge space etc. People quit, instead of the costly/time/legal issues involved in firing.

Its important to put up with this shit short term and let others quit.
