Despite some negative comments on my last few trip reports, I guess I'll go ahead and post my most recent experience, as it's a Saturday and I'm bored. Anyone who doesn't like it, doesn't believe it, or has a problem with the way I tell it, feel free to flame away...
I received 12 inches of San Pedro cactus for an early b-day present from my mom a couple weeks ago (coolest mom ever?!). After much research, I decided to try 10" to start with, as it's my first time with mescaline. Here's the setup:
Set/Setting: In a good mood. Well-rested with a semi-full stomach. A little anxious about nausea, but not too bad. In my living room alone on a Tuesday morning.
Other Substances Ingested: Cacao nibs (for their theobroma content), candied ginger slices (for nausea), peppermint tea (nausea), and lots of water.
Experience with Psychedelics: Limited to shrooms (6 times) and salvia leaves. My first mushroom trip was a disaster because I took too much. It was unpleasant, but showed me that I can withstand bad trips without lasting damage.
Method of Ingestion: Dried, powdered cactus stuffed in capsules. I cut the green part off the core and removed the skin, as I've heard the core and skin increase nausea. I dried the chopped material in front of a fan and in the oven, then put in a food processor/mortar and pestle to powderize. Wasn't completely powderized, but pretty close.
Total prep time: 6+ hours.
I took the pills over the course of an hour and a half with plenty of water. The ginger settled my stomach so that I had very little discomfort, if any. The wait was long, about 2 hours, but I was prepared and had plenty of reading material ready.
~~LIFTOFF!~~
After about 2 hours of lethargy, the first effects set in. The book I was reading became more vibrant: colors were brighter, words seemed to vibrate, and pictures had an "outline" around them, resulting in increased depth. However, the first real sign I was tripping came when I went to the bathroom: there was a woman in the style of the Sistine Chapel paintings or some Rennaissance art plain as day in the tile! I'd never noticed shapes in the tile before, so I knew the San Pedro was taking hold.
I returned to the living room and was overtaken by the beauty of the music coming from the stereo. It felt like I was floating on air as I danced and finally collapsed back on the couch.
Total comeup time: 30 minutes.
~~THE TRIP~~
For the duration of the trip, I alternated between extreme lethargy and euphoric stimulation. One moment my body would feel full of lead sediment, and the next it was like I was made of helium. Visual effects were somewhat mild, but definitely noticeable. My appetite was unaffected; if anything, I was HUNGRIER than usual and made the mistake of eating 4 pieces of pizza about 5 hours in (I have wheat, milk, cheese, and gluten sensitivities that cause nausea and fatigue, among other things). I was rewarded with a gut-wrenching pain that was made better by downing lots of water...Unfortunately, the water brought on nausea that was pretty intense but lasted only about 30 seconds. After that passed, everything was fine. It was back to happy tripping for the rest of the experience
Total trip time: 11-12 hours.
~~Insights and Lessons Learned~~
Overall, this was a pleasant experience. I was looking for a moderate trip--nothing too extreme but not so mild it was a waste of time, and that's pretty much what I got. There were moments of feeling a quiet inner connection with God/the Divine, times where the visuals were dominant and pictures would swirl and move, and moments where euphoria was the strongest. Because I'm a naturally low-energy person who suffers fatigue almost daily, I disliked the lethargic points of the trip, but not so much that I wouldn't do it again. My worst fear--vomiting--never came close to happening, which is awesome.
For those who haven't tried mescaline or mescaline-containing cacti, I'd compare the visual aspects to very strong marijuana or low-dose shrooms; the energy bursts are like a stimulant and the lethargy is like a depressant--we'll say ephedra and Xanax for comparative purposes. While I haven't tried MDMA, I'd compare the fleeting euphoria to what I've read about ecstasy.
Next time I'm going to take 12-15 inches and maybe some sort of low-dose stimulant like caffeine or propylhexedrine to combat the fatigue. Marijuana would also go great with San Pedro, and I kept wishing I had some during the trip. It's a pretty subtle experience unless your cactus is really potent or you take upwards of 12 inches, but sometimes subtle is exactly what you need.
Side Note: While I'm normally apprehensive about trying psychedelics, I have no worries about upping the dose on San Pedro. It felt as if I couldn't have willed myself into a bad trip even if I tried, which is not the case with shrooms, acid, and other hallucinogens. Mescaline is more gentle and forgiving than psilocybin, with a more lighthearted feel to it, though I'm sure some would argue with this.
