Like Ham-milton and Damien8787, I view it primarily as an issue of freedom.
That said, I am going to assume that most of those who have used salvia and found it useful or enjoyable are telling the truth. Salvia is not the easiest drug to use, it can be difficult to get good effects, especially with plain leaf or lower potency extracts. Some people really like it, perhaps they are in a minority. It does not mean they have any less right to use the things they like than you.

As for your pot and salvia smoking friend who seems to be exhibiting some symptoms of schizophrenia, what makes you thing the salvia is to blame? It could be the weed, or possibly not drug related at all. I have seen many people argue for continued criminalization of cannabis because of loved ones who developed mental illness. I suppose you think anyone who smokes weed must be fried or stupid.
I genuinely like what salvia does, regardless of what anyone else thinks about it.
In one experience, I experienced vivid early childhood memories. After that, I found myself come into contact with a powerful entity or god who seemed angry for a few moments. I tried to apologize for any offense I may have caused, then felt a profound feeling of love coming from this entity. I felt like a child and the spirit was like a combination of mother and teacher. In this life on earth, we are like children in school, here to learn. This was not even a breakthrough experience, I was aware of the real world during the whole thing. It was not quite a +4, but most of the psychedelics I have tried have not produced +4 trips. That said, this experience did have a positive impact on my life for perhaps a week. The only one that has seemed to have a long-lasting (more than 1-2months) impact was HBWR seeds, they were extremely useful in helping me overcome severe depression.
