I don't listen to the "take as directed" statement. I take "as-needed" and VERY often.

As long as you're following your doctors directions, it should be safe. Many "as-needed" prescriptions also include a "not-to-exceed" clause.

Opiaterequiem, how long have you been on benzos? If it hasn't been long I'd suggest slowly tapering down, your doses are massive, and if you were to sustain that regimen for a while getting out of your benzo dependence would be downright hellish. You need 24 mg alprazolam a day?

Oh Christ, the LD50 for clonazepam is 4000mg (rats) Imagine what it would be for humans. You ain't gonna OD on benzos unless you combine shit with it!!!
^You cannot take results from tests conducted on rats and say "whoa, wonder what the human dose would be".
For example, the morphine LD50 for rats is 223 mg/kg (IV). Such an IV dose would drop any opiate-naive human dead, no problem.
When studying snake venom toxicity, scientists give an LD50 for certain snake venoms based on data they get from working with rats, mice, and rabbits. The dose it takes to kill a human is always much much smaller than what the data suggests (the LD50 data which they get from studies on rats).
These LD50 studies conducted on rats and such are not definitive, they are just there to give some kind of idea on the toxicity of these snake venoms on RATS, not humans.
