No, you're totally right unfortunately, they're just corporate events these days...
Last time I went to Glasto was 2010, I spent alot of the weekend getting angry at the rest of the festival goers, bunch of fannys, lads queuing for an hour to take a shower, girly washbags under their arms. Putting gel in their fuckin hair for them to just put a generic festival straw hat on like the other 90%. Making me angry now just thinking about it.. Each to their owm I guess but I thought a festival was about getting messy and letting go completely for a few days. Fuck your hair do, bollocks to your smart phone updating FB every 10 mins.
Festivals arent what they was, by a long way, I love taking my kids to the family ones now, you tend to find a lot of the old skool festival revellers at them to. Much better...
Again to the OP, just go with the flow, dont try and plan to much because it'll all go out the window anyway.
@mdb - I thought I recalled you saying you was there '10, must of being someone else. 2o1o was a scorcher, previous festivals ive gone to have been a wash out on at least one of the days if not all
I know this was an old post, but does it really matter if people want to shower or not? Why should it ruin your experience - I'm sure you could still 'get messy' and have fun regardless. Different strokes for different folks n all that. I've never gone to Glastonbury, always listened to it on Radio 1 and would love to go. But I've heard it's like £100 a ticket and no way would I pay that for three days, I don't care how famous and ace the musicians were.
I can see where you're coming from in a way, though. Events are more business-like these days. For instance, take football matches. Most people went to them on a Saturday afternoon and enjoyed themselves. They didn't have to pay expensive amounts for a ticket or have to order one or become a season ticket holder, paying £100s per season, they just paid on the day and went in, people could stand and enjoy themselves. It's all a business and policed now. Don't get me wrong I'm not a footie fan, the sport bores me to death but my family are major Man United fans and enjoyed going to the matches.
But anyway with festivals, although it's changed, it's what you make it and if you want to get messy or whatever, then get messy. Leave others to have showers and what-not and don't let their ideas of doing things affect yours. Some of those people may not have experienced a festival the old way and as it's a vain world nowadays (I blame the media) then people feel pressured to 'look good, not smell' and so forth.
