Classical Sad Songs

Tears in Heaven. Written by Eric Clapton after his young son fell from an open window in a high rise building

Anything by those stupid boy bands of the 90's and early 2000's. Those songs make me want to shoot the radio and myself, so I will never hear them ever again.

Here's a little trivia for y'all...

This song, written by Bobby Braddock & Curly Putman, was arguably George Jones's biggest hit but he always hated it-- he thought it was "too morbid." He didn't particularly want to record it to begin with, but his producer talked him into it.

Some say it's the best Country song ever recorded. It's close, but for me #1 is Your Cheatin' Heart by Hank Williams, followed closely by You Never Even Called Me By My Name as sung by David Allan Coe.

Trivia note: Never Even Called Me By My Name was co-written Steve Goodman and ( uncredited) John Prine. I like the song but it's kind of making fun of country
I get why George Jones and Hank get that sort of credit, especially since Hank was so much a pioneer, but I honestly think of various Merle Haggard songs. that rate up there.

Yes!
I heard an interview with Prine in which he said he & Goodman were shitfaced drunk when they wrote it as a farce. The reason he wasn't credited was that he didn't want to be. Back when they wrote it, he thought it was stupid and never predicted the success Coe would bring to it. When he got older (time of interview), he had come to appreciate that the song's silliness was what made it great. He was happy with Coe for what he'd done with it.

My favorite Hank songs are I Got a Feeling Called the Blues and Lost Highway, but Cheating Heart is definitely the classic one. I used to like to Lost Highway on my harmonica when I was hitchhiking. Luckily no one could hear how out of time it was or they'd never have picked me up. To me it's one of the classic travel songs ❤️

These two and Long Gone Lonesome Blues are all tied for first place on my Hank's best list. There are several tied for second, too. I guess you could say I really, really like Hank a lot. My step-dad knew him before he hit it big. He remembered him in Montgomery, AL with his hat on the sidewalk for change. Everybody said he was a drunk who'd never amount to anything. They got the first part right.
I never much cared for Hank Jr, but Hank III is pretty damn good in several genres.
