"Rules" in fashion and makeup

P.S. I'm also probably the ONLY female I know of who dislikes accessories....everybody I know always says "oh you can keep it simple but the right accessory makes or breaks you" and I just roll my eyes and feign annoyance. I don't like jewelry, I don't like watches , I don't like those horrid costume jewelry and beads and shit, and all I will wear, if ever, are my pearl earrings. Yep....anybody else like me?

actually i generally only wear pearl earrings as well (i wear them every day, though, mainly out of laziness...don't want to put them in and take them out all the time.) i hate watches.

i'm kind of tired right now and too lazy to go into a lon explanation, but i do want to say that people dress a certain way to express something about themselves. even if someone dresses for comfort, he/she probably has preferences within the realm of comfortable clothes for certain colors, cuts, fabrics, etc. whether someone is choosing to wear cutting edge trends or "organic" clothes or vinatge clothes or whatever, he/she chooses the clothes based on the statement he/she wants to make to other people.

i forgot to mention that i haven't worn make-up since my jr prom (which was 7+ years ago or so). and the only accessories i wear are my rings and watch. no bracelets or necklace unless it's a REALLY special occasion.

I wear what fits well and looks good on me. I have very specific tastes when it comes to clothing. What I buy tends to be timeless. It's a style that looks contemporary and chic but can't really be pinned down to a specific year or brief period. I have a couple accessories that I wear daily. Gold chain (classy yet understated), gold ring (of personal significance), and my rolex. What I wear depends on how I feel that morning.

A well tailored pin stripe suit never goes out of style.

EDIT: most of the rules have to do with complementary colours and proportions. There are obvious colours and cuts that go well together to accentuate certain features. Basically when it comes to making a judgement call I find someone looks "right" when nothing looks "wrong". Not to say there can't be a multitude of styles involved, it's just that there are a few principles that should underscore every style of dress.

For work I wear what society and my job dictates. On my offdays you'll find me in sweatshirts/pants and beanies unless i'm going out for dinner or something.

I'd like to think that fashion rules don't apply to me. I lost interest in fashion at about 14, which is when my body started developing quickly into the curvy shape it is now. The herion chic of the nineties and my hourglass figure just couldn't seem to find any common ground.

The only rule I remember is what my mother told me, "Blue and green should never been seen." Which, when you think about it, is true. Those two colours do not look good worn together.

But there are plenty of other rules we unconsciously follow every day without thinking about it. Some of us won't wear thongs (aussie for flip flops) with jeans, or we won't wear sneakers with skirts. You find the right shoes to match an outfit and then freak if you can't find them before a big night out.

"I can't wear these!"

Then I can easily think of things that I see that annoy me. Like people's arses hanging out over their pants. FFS buy pants that fit! I do not want to see your thong (yeah knickers this time) or your boxers with little devils on them. WTF!? That should definitely be a rule right there.

Thin eyebrows - I'm just not a fan of those on anyone. It reminds me of the old ladies who used to get on my school bus. Why would you pluck off your eyebrows and then paint on new ones? I think your eyebrows are one of the most expressive parts of your face, and plucking them really thin detracts from their power. I nicely shaped brow that is in proportion to what it should be is really nice. I realise that some people don't mind that look, and maybe some people even like it, so I respect someone's choice if they want to look like that, I just don't like it, personally.

In summer I wear singlet tops all the time, but I have to wear a bra as well. I try to get bras with pretty straps and in colours that match my tops, but if it doesn't work out I don't care. If there is a strapless bra in this world that could do as good a job with my D-cup sixe breasts as a strapped bra can then I can't find it (or can't afford it).

generally the only accessory i wear is a necklace. occasionally i'll wear silver hoop earrings. i don't own bracelets or rings.

i'll always have a fondness for makeup although I don't wear a fuckton of it. It's fun to play :)

Oh well, rules were made to be broken ;)

I don't know what that whole not wearing white after labor day means. That must be some kind of American thing.

I'm wearing white now. Is that bad?

in many regards you're not girly and i doubt you're much of a presence in the 'girly thread' Go ahead and correct me if I'm wrong.

but your eyebrows must take a fuckton of maintenance. that to me, is girly ;) i have to maintain mine every other day, i can only imagine you must have to spend a lot more time on yours.

as far as the trend goes, i've always been into the more natural look. i do pluck mine and shape mine on my own, but i haven't changed their shape entirely. i see a thin eyebrow, i think of old ladies who overplucked and so they draw it on. it's just not a good association.

na i dont spend no time on them really. i dont really plcuk that shit on the regular. its weird. that shit dont grow in too fast. maybe once i week i take a tweezers to em. other than that. it takes me like 10 minutes to get ready when it comes to make up or whatever. eyebrows n eyes is all i put makeup on....my eyebrows were never that big to begin with, before i ever plucked them people would aways ask me "Oh my Gawwd, WHO does your EYEBROWS? OMG! they are so nice!" and i would be like...no one...i dont pluck them..

...i dont really remember when i started effin wit em......but either way works for me, i dont really care, i checked out some old pics w/natural eyebrows and i think they look good but i think that when i have strong eyebrows they make me look too....scarey for lack of abetter word......iunno....in a lot of pics even when i try and look nice i end up coming off angry looking or some shit. they eyebrows when theyre full just emphasize how my face is already kinda strong/harsh lookin (too much cheek bones, etc.) to me. iunno. imma photoshop myself some big eyebrows and see how it looks. i think.

Anyways

Yall got some good replies...keep talkin...i gotta go but everything in here is pretty coo so far

i think people that take the bulk of their fashion cues from magazines and hollywood and what designers are saying is 'so hot right now' are probably the same people who have a closet full of clothes that they hate. most of those trends are only cool for about 10 minutes. when you look at all those people who are slaves to the latest fads, it's pretty easy to hate on fashion. still, to call it

possibly the most useless, stupidest, vacant , shallow form of art

is not quite accurate in my opinion. there are some people out there who dress really creatively, and i think it's just as valid a form of art as anything else when it's done well. i know people with some damn flavorful clothing. i also have a lot of respect for people who can make their own clothes. for some people, the way they dress is just as much an example of self-expression as painting a mural or writing a song.

i don't wear makeup, but i can see how it has the potential to be very artistic. some people approach the face as a canvas, but for every one that does there are probably 1000 bitches out there caking on the products like pre-programmed clowns. those are probably the same people that care about fashion 'rules'. nobody should listen to that shit. i personally rock a lot of different styles because i like a lot of different things. fashion can be cool if you don't take yourself too seriously.

I'm the most unfashionable guy I know. Jeans and a t-shirt everyday for who knows long. If I could I'd just give someone my sizes and have them do it for me...clothes are so uncool.

Um, I don't think that originated in Australia. I just think it's an older expression.

Um, well I just made the clarification since through my travels in Europe and from talking to american Blers here, they commonly mistake references to thongs for g-string underwear. I assumed then that using the term thongs to refer to a certain type of footwear was an australian trait and calrified my meaning for the international message board.

However, if you can determine the first origin of the term thong/s for the use of footwear and give us a little history lesson on this word and it's meaning in different localities, then I sit back and eagerly await your post. Hell, make a thread about it if you want to :)

Screw fashion and what other people think. Wear what you want, when you want. Life is too short and too precious to worry about petty things. :)

That said, I wear what I want, and I don't care if it's the newest/latest/whatever. I am known to wear my hair in blonde & pink dreads. I definitely don't dress for anyone but me.

I admit I am one of those girls that carries an expensive purse..it was a present from my hubby, and with as much as it was, I'm going to carry it until the damn thing falls apart! ;)

(beatlebot) I hear ya on the bra straps sista! ;) I have D/DD breasts and if you see my bra strap then you see it, I don't care. If I'm wearing a tank top and it peeks out then I'll try to have it match but it's really not an issue.

My wardrobe is so plain (jeans and t-shirts in diff. colors) that I feel like I have to wear some sort of accessories. I don't get into costume jewelry at all (the beaded, whatever of the moment). I have really casual hemp necklaces that I've made or a couple of silver necklaces to choose from, and I always wear my silver watch, silver earrings, and a few silver rings (passed down from my grandma). They're not really things I give thought to, I just always wear them. Basically the only thing that changes is my necklaces if I even wear one.

I agree that the 'right accessory makes or breaks you' is stupid. For me though, that's how I give some personality to my simple wardrobe, through accessories.

If I find myself wearing things that are "in", it's for two reasons:

1. I don't go out of my way to find shops with unusual clothes. Most standard shops have clothes that are fashionable at the moment. So I pick what I like, and it often turns out to be something that's "in".

2. You get more exposure to clothes that are in fashion. I may not like something originally, but I see more and more people wearing it, and I start to think "hey, that actually looks good, I want one of those".

Generally I try to add something unique to my style, I don't want to look like a fashion victim. On the other hand though, most of the time I just don't have the energy to dress up nice or interesting, and end up wearing just a random top with jeans.

I have D/DD breasts and if you see my bra strap then you see it, I don't care. If I'm wearing a tank top and it peeks out then I'll try to have it match but it's really not an issue.

Agree on this (apart from the D/DD part.. I'm more like an A/B :p)I don't mind my bra straps showing, as long as they are'nt worn-out and ugly. I think it looks nice if the bra is an interesting colour or pattern.

blue and green should never be seen without a colour in between. :)

depending on the shades involved, i think blue and green can look great together. i have a black, four-button suit. it looks great with a dark blue shirt and this awesome sparkly green donna karan green tie i have...

i agree. i think the rule is not to mix primaries. i dont think there's any rule against primary and secondary colour combos, especially when theyre adjascent on the spectrum like green and blue or blue and violet..

the hue/shade of a "red" or "green", for example, can be so varied, anyway, how can you really make a concrete rule when it comes to color..?

i agree that a true red and a true green hue look tacky together (makes me think of christmas), but i like a deep cranberry paired with chartreuse..

in conclusion, i think rules for wearing certain colors together are pretty useless.

bingo. if you're going out in shops to purchase clothing, they're going to have product that is influenced by fashion trends and then in turn, your style is affected by what is "in"

yeah....but to say it's a multi-billion dollar industry with lots of talented artists is an understatement....but hey you're entited to your own [rather harsh] opinion. I agree with everything @lterego said.
