It just got me thinkin......(thanx fairnymph for the post that started me thinkin on this all)

Over time standards for beauty change non stop. A long time ago it was fashionable to be as pale as possible, showin that you never had to be poor or do work out in the fields, etc. now its popular to be really tan. one year a certain kind of clothing is embarassing, ugly, lame, funny looking....two years later the same thing is suddenly the new popular thing. everyone made fun of the horrible clothes of the 80s , when i was a younger kid. "tacky" is a word youd hear alot about that shit. like OMG i cant believe i ever wore that, sooooo lame, etc. Now all this stuff that was "tacky" and unfashionable is suddenly THE fuckin look. i seen a article in the daily news that "leggings" are the new thing again! lmao. i had those when i wa slike 5.

it goes back and forth. and each time, whoever didnt change their look to the new look, is somehow uncool or unfashionable. The standard changes and each time, women are obligated to follow the new trend like its the new rules, new way of life, change with the times, etc. What im sayin here is that there are certain "rules" that (mostly women) have come to accept over time.

What i wanna know is, how can you put so much weight on something that was made up, at one point, just according to a few peoples personal preference. This aint the gospel, its a subjective, arbitrary thing that some designer or something came up with. Even "You aint supposed to wear white after labor day." Thats one of the oldest "rules" in the book (where its from i dont know but ive heard it a couple times.) WTF is that shit all about?! Who the hell said that, and why the FUUUUCK should anyone care? And why does anyone care? (maybe they dont, but it sure seems like theres alot of people who do.)

I aint saying everyone acts like this. I honestly dont know. and especially here on BL i imagine the chicks would be more laid back. i dont have friends like that and wasnt raised that way. So i just wonder where this shit all came from? How did certain things become so ingrained in peoples heads, that its actually something to make fun of someone over if they dont follow it?

It seems like there is a unspoken "right" way to dress, do your makeup, and etc. To me i just view shit as do whatever you want, who cares whats popular. but i wonder what goes on inside the heads of people who feel some kinda need to follow the "rules." And when does it become a objective thing? when, and why, does a fashion trend or style thats popular at the time, become a rule that all civilized people who wear clothes must follow, and why would you ever take a simple idea that is popular in fashion, possibly the most useless, stupidest, vacant , shallow form of art, and take it to heart so much that not only do you take it as a rule, but ridicule other people who dont also take it as a rule?

Like i said...Im sure i will get alot of responses like "well i dont care, why you gettin your panties in a twist over this, you act like everyones like that but not alot of people are".....I aint sayin yall are like that, i think its mostly the TV n shit that puts these ideas in peoples heads. but for the people who are like that, whats goin on there? like "OMG, EVERYBODY knows you cant wear ______ and _________ togeher!" Well, what if i do? whats gonna happen? some model-wannabee bitches is gonna laugh at me?

What do yall think about all this?

I wear jeans and a 'girl-fit' t-shirt on a daily basis. Seriously, every freaking day that's what I wear; I have the same t-shirt in like 7 colors. I really don't care that much about fashion - I like to look clean and put together, but 'fashionable' - not really.

That said though I think that there are staples that will never go out of style (say a nice fitting business suit, a nice button up shirt, a dark wash, straight leg jean) depending on whether or not you have use for them. Everything else IMO is just a fad; it's here now and it'll be gone next year, they just keep cycling over and over again.

My opinion on it is if you stick to the basics that never go out of style then you can gear your accessories to the current 'fashion' of the time if you want. Should you do that just to fit in? Never. Dress how you want.

i wear what i find attractive, not just because it is popular. for example, right now, people all over are wearing those ugly as sin rubber clogs. screw that. those are the ugliest mother effing shoes i have ever seen. ewwww. no way in hell people are wearing them bc they are cute or comfy. they are wearing them bc they are trendy, and that is lame, IMO. (but then again, maybe people actually do like them!)

i was raised following the "rules." went to charm school, modeling etc....so it is still ingrained in me a bit. not proud of it, but white purses and shoes in the winter make me shudder :D as do black purses in the summer...but it isn't as bad as white in winter. (but, i use one anyway! spent too much on this sucker....and it is bad ass, one of those seat belt bags)

and i loathe seeing peoples panties, though that is rare and (this one pisses me off) when people can't find a fucking strapless bra, and you see their straps on a shirt where you weren't meant to wear a bra with it, like spaghetti straps. it is uber tacky in my book.

but yeah, they are just arbitrary rules someone made up and some of us have grown to follow.

people should wear what they want, and be comfortable enough with themselves not to care if i get annoyed at their bra straps. tacky whores.

:D

i am like QE, i wear classics. always have.

Yea DM, thats exactly the shit im talkin about....

Thats what im tryna understand...Why? Where the hell does this shit come from? Who made up the rule of no black in summer and no white in winter? like who was sitting there one day and just decided, hey, i think we should limit what colors we wear during certain months!

Its pretty interesting to me cuz from my point of view it makes no sense, im tryna get into the minds of the people who follow this shit and figure out how they see it......to me it seems obvious that nothing should determine what youre wearin other than you and what you like, but if i was to look at it thru the eyes of someone who put weight on that type of rules, im sure they would be shuddering at me or somethin....the shit thats considered slob, lazy, crappy hang around the house clothes, is the type of shit i wear all the time....or like chicks wearing dudes clothes. thats pretty much all i wear other than for work. but some people view that not only as weird but as a complete total travesty, like the blood gonna drain from their faces and theyll pass out or somethin if they were to see someone dressedlike that.

i like breaking into thrift stores on acid and choosing goofy shit i end up wearing when all my other clothes are dirty. people always think i'm cool, but i do hang with a lot of edgy hippies

I hate trends in general. I wear what I think looks good. I also believe in absolutes in beauty/fashion, such that regardless of trends or personal opinions, certain things are appealing and other things are just ugly.

If my eyebrow comment prompted this, well, I just think the way your eyebrows are look bad for you, and also, super thin eyebrows look bad on everyone. I have always had this opinion. I think there is a certain way eyebrows should look, in general, and that eyebrows much thicker or thinner than that look unnatural/ugly.

i don't know where a rule such as the labor day one began, and agree it is silly. at this point, it is just brainwashing, and cultural norms that keep it alive.

take your (hip hop/urban/whatever) style for example...a lot of the guys like to wear their pants hanging so far down they have to hold them up. that is retarded as hell too =D supposedly it began from the poor kids who had hand me downs, so their pants wouldn't fit and voila, a trend starts.

where trends begin is a fun thing to look into, and while some are stupid, it makes sense when you do...whether you stick with them because you like them or because you think it is cool...that is what i find is important.

i agree with fairnymph. trends are stupid. especially the rubber clogs! ah darthmom, you are right on with that. some things look like shit on everyone.

i judge fashion/style on my own rubric..on a person-to person basis. i'm more forgiving with clothes, as i see clothing as a matter of choice (so long as someone isnt wearing an unflatterng shape/cut i dont mind if i think the pattern sucks or what have you).
color is more important to me. when people wear makeup/piercings/haircolors/eyebrow styles that make their features or coloring look like shit/worse than if they didnt wear that stuff, i'm inclined to think "what a twat".

i think the point of style is to accentuate the good features and to express your personality. it's more fun than serious, though it's still serious enough to necessitate some standards.

i think thin eyebrows are beautiful sometimes, for example i just watched the 1935 version of Les Miserables...(let me see if i can find the picture of the woman in it)....hers were so thin and long an unnatural, and it was fucking beautiful. most of the women of that era wore them like that, and i love it. when the trend came back a few years back i got excited again :D

just another point from what i said in the above thread, if you like it that is all that matters. trying to please fairnymph isn't important, it is whether you like it or not lacey. and that is all that matters!

here she is...

in the movie, it was even more pronounced, and just beautiful.

oh yea no doubt, i wasnt sayin i was gonna change nothin. i like how i look fine. im just sayin thats what got me thinkin about it.

i think theres no way in hell that there can be any absolutes in fashion cuz what looks good on one person looks horrible on another person.....to use the eyebrow example again, one face might look better with thin brows another face with thicker ones. how can you apply one rule meant for one type of face to all the different types of people and faces out there.

And also, fairnymph you made me think this too:

"i just think thin eyebrows look bad on you" or however it was worded:

if it was some one else as a example, it dont matter, im just wondering,
do certain people say "well i just think its a bad look for you", not necessarily because it really looks that bad on the person as a individual, but cuz they are taught to believe that certain things look bad on everyone?

for example.......uh...well, im bad at examples, cuz i dont really know whats condsidered a general, always-bad thing when it comes to fashion/styles.

but say for some reason, that style/clothing looked really good on one person? even if it was a "bad look" , would you be able to admit that it looks really good on that person? or would it be considered "tacky" or "ugly" or a "fashion faux pas" , even if it looks great on the person wearing it, simply because of the fact that that clothing/style has been declared "bad" by the fashion rules.

Hmm, well I do think super thin eyebrows look bad on everyone, but they look far worse on some than others. In any case, my thinking someting is ugly has nothing to do with fashion rules (and oftentimes my thinking directly negates fashion 'rules' at the time), but just my own sense of aesthetics.

lacey, you have sort of a long narrow face, so the thin eyebrows accentuate that in a negative sense. Thicker, more subtley shaped eyebrows would balance your face and flatter you much more.

The pic Darth posted, that woman has a rounded face so the thin eyebrows look less bad on her, also, I can't really tell from the pic but her eyebrows don't look that excessively thin. I certainly think a little variation is to be expected based on facial type, but the extremes are never appealing imo.

In general, I just like a natural or mostly natural look on everyone. Clothing is obviously another matter and a bit more versatile.

i dunno. as a male, i feel that i have to "obey" more fashion rules than any of you females..

my choices of acceptable clothing are far more limited, basically pants or shorts, a t-shirt or a collared shirt. thats a bout it.

granted, i buck it sometimes when i wear my long homemade camo skirt(i'll see if i can find a pic) but over all, male clothing sucks.

The 'no white after labor day' and 'no black in summer' rules really aren't followed anymore or considered a 'faux pas' going from what big names in fashion tend to say now. I guess that's only going on what they say, but so is following the rule - as far as I'm concerned I wear white in winter and black in summer (clothing, bags, and shoes) without a second thought.

As far as eyebrows are concerned I used to wear mine on the thin side and now they're more 'natural' looking. My mom wears really thin eyebrows and they look great on her, she would look really bad with thicker brows. I just took my shape from her when I started doing my own and it didn't look good on me so I had to find what did.

I think a lot of women pull of the super thin brow look really well and others just don't. Thin brows were a fashion 'trend' and so were really bushy ones (madonna is a good example of the brow 'fads' - look at her pictures over the years), who cares what other people think looks good, just do what you think looks good on you.

I don't know much about fashion, but let me just say that the shit from the 80's was always weak, but trends of the 60's and 70's are still cool. This biggest thing I hate now is that god awful overly tanned, overly make-uped, bleached blonde bimbo look.

I think that thin brows look more attractive when they are thin in proportion (thicker on the arch towards the middle of your face).

I don't like the thin eyebrow look on anyone. That's my opinion.

Sorry lacey, I gotta run but I promise to devote more time to this thread later.

out of curiosity lacey

in many regards you're not girly and i doubt you're much of a presence in the 'girly thread' Go ahead and correct me if I'm wrong.

but your eyebrows must take a fuckton of maintenance. that to me, is girly ;) i have to maintain mine every other day, i can only imagine you must have to spend a lot more time on yours.

as far as the trend goes, i've always been into the more natural look. i do pluck mine and shape mine on my own, but i haven't changed their shape entirely. i see a thin eyebrow, i think of old ladies who overplucked and so they draw it on. it's just not a good association.

there are a couple people on bl who probably live and die by whatever fashion trend is popular but it doesn't seem like that is the case overall. i always look and see what trends are popular, and if i like it i will incorporate it. if not, i won't, because i don't care that much and my clothing style is definitely what i would consider classic. i rarely buy something that won't be in style in a season. it's a complete waste of money more than anything, and i don't really want to succumb to what some magazine says i should wear.

i don't care about white after labor day or anything like that. i don't really wear white so it doesn't apply to me but it doesn't bother me. i've also heard many times from supposed so called fashion experts that nobody really cares about that rule anymore anyways. the only thing that really bothers me is different prints together, ie plaids and stripes or paisleys. or black/brown. that drives me up the wall.

the #1 thing that bothers me about fashion is the girls who think they have to carry around a $300-400 purse. It just astounds me. Fuckin sheep.

i've never paid attention to fashion trends in any sense. i buy clothes that are affordable to me, fit well and are comfortable and practicle. i don't buy a whole new wardrobe every season just because some designer said to. i really don't understand people like that. i like to think i have enough of a brain to pick out my own clothes than to listen to the fashion magazines or whatever.

I don't give a fuck about what's in fashion. I dress for comfort and I know what I like and what looks good on me. Doesn't mean I don't like perusing those two inch thick fashion magazines (well...in Style & Vogue especially) etc etc etc or watching stuff like that new Meryl Streep movie etc ;)

I know what's in and what's hot and what's trendy, but that's just it...I'm just a voracious reader and sponge for a lot of stuff . But fashion is just that for me....frivolous and to be honest, quite boring lol. I'd gladly let myself be styled over by my fabulous fashionista gay friends during special ocassions but frankly, I'm happy and comfortable wearing the same shit I've been wearing for the past decade that I know looks good on me.

And makeup? Ugh....waaaay past that phase. I don't wear makeup at all now, and right now im in a quantity over quality kick so I don't go hoarding stuff I never use. Now it's KISS for me! (Keep it simple, stupid!)=D

P.S. I'm also probably the ONLY female I know of who dislikes accessories....everybody I know always says "oh you can keep it simple but the right accessory makes or breaks you" and I just roll my eyes and feign annoyance. I don't like jewelry, I don't like watches , I don't like those horrid costume jewelry and beads and shit, and all I will wear, if ever, are my pearl earrings. Yep....anybody else like me?
