Tampa's Electronica Scene...
I wanted to start a local discussion on the current state of Tampa Bay's EDM scene.
Back in 2002 the clubs were pumping commercial dance stuff from the likes of Ian van Dahl, Lasgo, DJ Encore and a lot of the tracks were being played during the day time on 93.3flz. Now I'm not a fan of commercial dance stuff (anymore) my tastes have matured very much since then. But NOW for like 1.5 years the clubs have been pumping out nothing but crappy and commercial Break Beat. I mean sometimes I hear some hard trance and hard house thrown in some sets but seriously the Tampa scene has really lost touch with the trance world and it's an itch that needs to be scratched if you ask me.
We need some real trance DJ's stepping up to the plate who will pump out the hot hot new tracks that are coming out of Germany, Sweden, UK, and Ibiza each year. I mean come on the house party has JUST started to play:
Paul van Dyk - Nothing But You (released: Mar. 24, 2003 )
Paul van Dyk - Time of Our Lives (released: Sep. 21, 2003)
Motorcycle - As The Rush Comes (released: January 6, 2003)
Andain - Beautiful Things (released: January 3, 2004)
Those last two were probably the MOST played and MOST popular vocal trance tracks of 2003, and they were released in Europe early-mid 2003. Doesn't any DJ over here pay attention to the scene where the music is getting generated from!? Why wait until early 2004 to grab music thats now OLD news half way across the world.
I dunno...the scene over here in Tampa is #1 Behind the times #2 Not eclectic and interesting enough and #3 Lacking quality!
DJ Santana is a good local DJ. He spins at Storman's Palace (ew, barf!) on Friday's and at Groovy Mule on Saturdays. He's been around a while and plays a wide variety of stuff: breakz, trance, progressive, hard trance, hard house...
His passion is trance and his recent mixes have been littered with the right kind of music that Tampa needs right now!
