what kind of rock music do you trip out to? any particular artists or songs that are good for tripping?

my favorite tripping artists are:

1. Jimi Hendrix(he is GOD imo; "Voodoo child", "Purple haze")
2. Grateful Dead("Thats it for the other one", "Dark star")
3. The Velvet Underground("Heroin", "Venus in furs")
4. David Bowie("Space oddity", "Suffragette city")
5. Cream, also Clapton's solo work; "White room"(Cream), "Cocaine"(solo)

what artists do you love to trip to?

You can pretty much trip to anything that qualifies as "avant-garde" or "experimental".

That goes for music, movies... whatever.

I used to be really into experimental film.

If you're new to experimental music, check out The Residents. They're pretty much the biggest avant-garde music act around.

Two words.

Pink. Floyd.

Prepare to be reduced to tears at some point though. If you are listening to DSOTM, the tears will come at "Great gig in the sky". Not a single lyric in the song, yet it tells such a sad, painful, deep story and stone cold sober it chokes me. Haven't tripped to it yet because to be completely honest, I'm a little scared to. I don't know where it will leave my mind. Dysphoria is scary.

for films i like "I'm Not There"(bizarre movie about Bob Dylan), "Woodstock", and (of course)"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". i also like comedies while tripping, always funny and interesting...

i prefer "classic acid rock" type artists to trip to, not really into "experimental" music(although The Velvet Underground is labeled as "avant-garde" and "experimental", and i love the Velvets).

Rock? Pink Floyd is what got me started with psychedelic music. Frank Zappa if you want something experimental. Hendrix is amazing and don't forget The Beatles. Also, Hot Tuna > Airplane.

Check out Robert Cray, Buddy Guy, Herbie Hancock, Fever Tree, Procol Harum, John Mayall, Clapton(last trip I had was to his new album), Gov't Mule, Widespread Panic, Jeff Beck, George Harrison(All Things Must Pass is my fav), Tom Petty, Monsters of Folk, Peter Gabriel(Melt & Up are my favs), Paul Simon, Steve Winwood(Wow, checkout 9 Lives or About Time), Steve Kimock Band, The Derek Trucks Band, Robert Randolph, Blood Sweat and Tears, Love, The New Mastersounds, Bill Frisell, David Gilmour, Santana, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Merl Saunders

Now I'm going to mention some more modern, experimental stuff. Mind you this is on the subject of music to trip to that involves actual instruments for the most part.
Carl Broemel, My Morning Jacket(!!), M. Ward, Bright Eyes, Spoon, The Shins, The Octopus Project, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, BoomBox, Papadosio (!!), Lotus (!), Sound Tribe Sector 9(!), Disco Biscuits, Flow Trio, Future Rock, Galactic, Givers, Keller Williams, Medeski Martin and Wood, moe., Particle, Pnuma Trio, Somasphere, Railroad Earth, String Cheese, Shpongle, The New Deal, Tortoise, Toubab Krewe, Umphrey's McGee, The Werks, Buckethead, Perpetual Groove

I can't listen to stuff like shpongle when tripping - it starts to overwhelm me a bit.

When I make tripping playlists I usually mix in the heavier psytrance with softer ambient/electronica or space rock or whatever. It's nice to mix in that type just to get your mind going, but solid psytrance does tend to get overwhelming or just repetitive. I find that typical alt rock like sublime, rage against the machine, alice in chains whatever tends to sound to 'normal'. I think it's just the verse/chorus over and over that just gets annoying.

TOOL

Also cant go wrong with The Floyd, The Doors, The Beatles, The dead ect.

Check out a band called the Quintessence. Its a psychedelic band Raja Ram formed in the late 60s.

Certain Radiohead tracks can be really nice too. You might also want to check out bands like Dead Meadow, Circulatory System and The Olivia Tremor Control
