Rock bottom: Heroin use is on the rise [Alaska]

I always wondered what percentage of those Alaskan fishermen take drugs. And, what drugs they take. (You know, like the guys on the Discovery Ch.)

I find it hard to believe that many people could do that job sober, for a long period of time at least.
Iv heard that most of them smoke alot crack or do heroin etc, cause they work for a few months make a bunch of money blow it all, then go back to work take a tollerance break make a bunch of money repeat.

Inflation seems to be higher in Ak than the rest of the US. Between the higher wages, state subsidy checks, etc they have more money than the average lower 48, but shit costs more.

Anyone want to take a guess as to why there are only 2 Methadone clinics up there? And why they are losing funding?

Could it be the Republican state government? Like the Republican Guiliani who successfully stopped state funded Methadone treatment in NYC for 3 months? Or Republican John Mccain who tried to pass an anti-Methadone bill through Congress to stop all Federal funding for Methadone programs?

I couldn't imagine being an addict up there. I bet those state cops are no different than Southern sherrifs in the '40s; billy club you into a coma and throw your dopesick ass in a drunk tank for 72 hours without blinking an eye.

They need the state government to pump Federal $ into the Buprenorphine and Methadone programs, to subsidize treatment for addicts who can't afford it. This investment saves state and federal money in the long run by lowering the cost of treating addicts in the ER, crime-punishment, etc. Similar to what Governor O'Malley did recently here in Maryland.

About the fisherman...

My friend said his roommate's best friend (you with me??) went on one of those seasonal boats to catch fish/crabs and stuff. He was stunned to find that everyone smoked meth regularly all day and night. He also said that after the season is over they have to wait 1-2 weeks and then pass a drug test to collect ANY money. Go figure?
