Was watching channel 10 news this evening and they reported that legislation for Roadside Saliva Testing in NSW had been passed today and that testing will commence July 1st 2006.

I personally will never condone driving whilst under the influence but it makes you think as to what is a safe amount of time after a big night out would it be to get behind the wheel. ie will traces in saliva still be enough 24 hours after a night out to return a positive sample?.

Me thinks it's time to put the taxi company on speedial

EDIT: (24/09/2006) Thread renamed for consistency with other roadside drug testing threads. hoptis

The report gave me the impression that this was no trial and that it's here to stay, however i could be wrong. I'm sure there will be more details in tomorrow's news.

lol reakon it would detect it if u start plugging ur gear.... although for me thats morally wrong, as the cons outway the pros lol

damn ohwell. I'm in brisbane and still yet to see the apparent drug bus they have but i'm also prescibed Dexies. Does anyone know if the saliva test can distingish between drugs(Like reagents do) Because i know i would test positive but would i have to prove it were the dexies that made me fail the test?

Not that i would ever Ride my moto under influene of any other drug, except after a safe period of time has passed

Can you find any information about this on the web? Links?

I suggest everyone else reads this before anymore speculation or questions that have been answered before:

Roadside Drug Testing....

^^only channel 10 (journalism?) at the moment although I have been scanning other news sources. I'm hoping something pops up or rather i'd look the fool

Not seen anything in the papers about NSW, but SA is moving forward too.

Premier vows to hit drug drivers
By GREG KELTON
09 Jun 2006

DRIVERS will face random roadside tests for drugs such as cannabis and amphetamines from July 1.

Premier Mike Rann pledged yesterday: "We are going to hit drug drivers hard.

"We will bring down the full force of the law on those who put their own lives and the lives of others at huge risk by drugging up and driving out," he said.

Specially trained police will be able to use the new powers to pull over any driver anywhere in the state and ask for a drug test.

This will involve the driver providing a sample by placing an absorbent swab in their mouth or touching it with their tongue.

The sample will be screened at the roadside with a result determined in about five minutes. If positive, a second sample will be taken.

Drivers found with drugs in their system face a $300 expiation fee and the loss of three demerit points with greater fines and loss of licence for subsequent offences.

A $700 penalty will apply to those drivers who refuse to co-operate as well as the loss of three demerit points. Subsequent refusals will lead to licence disqualifications of up to 12 months.

The Victorian trial has already become permanant.

What about this. (Really retarded meth come down idea... so get ready to hit me)

Some type of little patch you can stick in the inside of your mouth (I realise it would hurt pulling it off...), and when you get the swab, push it on this pad in your mouth, which will release a saliva-like substance that comes out when pressure is applied. Some saliva might get on it but it might not be enough to detect. Ofcourse just in case they can see it, it'd have to be the colour of your mouth, and you would only put it on when you're around known drug/booze bus areas.

Why did I bother wasting my time and yours with this....

Class... that is pure class, Splatt!

And Fry just took the words out of my mouth.

Of course, taking your idea to the logical conclusion, you wouldn't need the patch on the inside of your mouth, as your home-made rocket would spring up out of the trunk and fire an oil slick infront of the cop car before he pulled you over. ;)

What about something like a mouth guard which lines the entire mouth. Then you could save a clean saliva specimen and place it inside the guard.

Fuck thats a silly idea, now things are getting desperate.

Anyway they would be watching you like a hawk.

Only solution is dont drive if your wrecked.

I don't condone dribing when on drugs or alcohol or tired.
But these saliva tests can detect amphetamines and cannabis well after the effects have worn off.

Yep can detect marijuana and speed up to 3 days after you take it...

speed is snorted usually so traces remain in your nasal cavity for long periods and would give a positive test and marijuana same deal its smoke so its going to be all thru your breathing tract.

Thats why the 2nd test would be a blood test .. which i presume the police wouldnt take a blood sample but take you to hospital for the blood test then you get results a week later,This is when the Fine will be given when they determine the percentage in your system.

But i want to know what limits they would set... i.e. i have been smoking everyday for the last 15 years, i can have a few cones in the morning and be totally sober a couple hours later but the blood test would show otherwise, .Just like how alcohol affects everyone different with body size, weight etc ...

i think alot of people who only smoke when they go to sleep at night are going to have as much trouble with these tests as to people who smoke all day.

If you smoke a heap of cones and then get behind the wheel then your stupid, atleast wait an hour or so till you feel more sober......

8o VICTORIA TESTING PROCEDURES8o

Testing Procedures

Random drug driving tests will be conducted in a similar way to current random breath tests. A drug bus similar to a booze bus will be used.

Step 1:

Drivers will be required to provide a saliva sample by placing an absorbent collector in their mouth or touching it on their tongue until a sample is collected. The sample will be screened at the roadside, with the result determined within approximately five minutes. Drug tests will be conducted by specially trained and authorised police officers.

Step 2:

Drivers who return a negative drug test will not be detained further. Drivers who return positive test results will be required to accompany police to a drug bus and provide a second saliva sample.

Step 3:

Drivers who produce a positive result to the second sample will be interviewed according to normal police procedure, and the sample sent to a laboratory for analysis. The driver will be provided with a portion of the second sample, which they may choose to have independently analysed.

Step 4:

Once the process is complete, the driver will be allowed to leave, although they will not be permitted to drive their vehicle. No infringement will be issued or charge laid until the results of the laboratory analysis are known. Drivers will be informed within a few weeks if the laboratory analysis confirms an illicit drug was present and they are to be fined or prosecuted for an offence.

Also does this mean that pure mdma would not be detected by this test.... Provided you were lucky enough to find pure mdma.

How long after consuming THC or methamphetamines can they be detected?

The consumption of THC will be detected for several hours after use. The exact time will vary depending on the amount and potency of the cannabis used and on the individual’s metabolism.

Drivers who may have inactive THC residue in their bodies from use in previous days/weeks will not be detected.

Methamphetamines may be detected for approximately 24 hours after use.

Extremely large doses, other drugs taken at the same time, and differences in individual metabolism may affect the duration of the effects of methamphetamines.

Will other substances mask detection of THC or methamphetamines?

No. There is no evidence to suggest that any substance will mask detection of either THC or methamphetamines, when using a saliva drug testing procedure.

Will THC from passive smoking be detected in saliva samples?

Experience from Victoria’s random drug testing to date shows that the levels of THC which could occur in saliva due to passive smoking are considerably lower than the lowest level which will be detected by the saliva testing devices being used by the Victorian Police.
