I am day 19 from pain killers methadone 30-40mg and 32mg of hydromorphone. Im doing my best to hold it together but my whole body is amped up like restless legs but my whole body. I have tried mag supplement, can't get benzo's anymore did try a few but they didn't work anyways. Hot baths helps a little. Antihistamines were a really bad idea I learned that the hard way :( The worse is it is keeping me from sleeping more then a 2 to 3 hours a night. Is this still normal 19 days out? When will it end and is there anything I can try to make it stop!! Could it be caused by something else my pain killers were hiding? (I was on pain killers for a foot injury for 4 yrs) I'm scared to death this is something else but really dont' know since this is my first detox from pain meds.
Thank You all for help!!!

Most people believe that benzos help with RLS, when in fact they do not. Only clonazepam (and possibly temazepam) are FDA approved to "treat" RLS, when in reality clonazepam is only good for helping someone go to sleep and stay asleep (so can help with PLMS, peroidic limb movement syndrome, which is when the movement of your limbs while you are sleeping constantly wakes you up in the middle of the night). Also, opioids are used to treat severe RLS (I'm perscribed methadone for severe RLS and PLMS), so there will be a backlash of increased RLS when stopping them. If you can get your hands on some gabapentin, pregabalin, clonidine, pramipexole, or ropinirole they might be able to help with the RLS symptoms. Dopamine agonists like pramipexole or ropinirole is probably the first drugs a doctor would perscribe you for treatment of RLS (they are usually first line treatments of RLS). Also yes, after stopping methadone, the WD symptoms will last for an extended peroid of time, much longer than short acting opioids like heroin or oxycodone. It isn't much surprise that you're experience symptoms 19 days after stopping.

Some natural ways to decrease RLS is to excerise a few hours before bed, take a warm bath before bed, avoid all alcohol, cigs, and caffeine as they can increase the symptoms.

I'm going to try the Dr for lyrica I'm barely holding on I thought by now 19 days I would be on the up side by now but the last 2 days have been like week 1
No foods weak anxiety so bad I can't hold still. I so feel now for anyone going through this hell I so wish I could go back 4 years and tell tie pain Dr no. Has anyone here kicked methadone if so how long before you start to feel a little human? The lack of sleep and my whole body feels its amped up I can't hold still. Any stories so I know what's happening is normal?

Nine-teen days is not that far out from quitting and it sounds like you were taking relatively large amounts and methadone has a long half-life. How did you taper?

Yes you can very likely stop it right now by taking a hefty dose of loperamide aka immodium (it takes 3 hours just to kick in).

You are so far outside the acute phase of wds that loperamide should absolutely stop the RLS IF you take enough.

HOWEVER, do not get in the habit of taking immodium everyday. I'd take it every 2-3 days, and slowly keep your dose going down. It will help with the
rls, chill your body out, and make it easier to deal with. But it does this because immodium has an opiate effect in your body. So you CAN get addicted
to it and when you stop, rls comes right back. Thats why you need to take the absolutely lowest amount possible to just make the rls "bearable".

If it goes away 100%, you've taken too much. So it can take a little bit of time just to figure out what dose you need to be taking.
Immodium should be a very useful OTC medicine for you at this point so use it wisely.

Thanks you everyone, I did a odd taper, My start dose 4 years ago was 40mg methadone and 32mg hydromorphone. I went from 40mg to 30mg of methadone slowly then to 30mg oxycotin, along with 32mg hydromorphone. Then quit both oxycotin and hydromorphone and went to ms-cotin. Did 1 week went from 120 ms 2 60mg a day for 2 days then to 30mg every 2 15mg 2days and the jumped off. It's been so brutal I keep telling myself all these symptoms of RLS/RLB are from methadone but in the back of my mind the anxiety keeps telling me this is permanent. This is my first time of ever getting off pain killers so I guess i'm "detox naive" It's refreshing knowing this is normal and I pray not permanent.
How much immodium should I take? I don't want to clog myself up if that's even possible now. Will Imodium drag out this withdraw or just help symptoms? I just pray I'm at a turning point and can get some sleep soon.. Again thanks to everyone for help.

I have been clean from oxy contin and heroin for 2.5 years.the anxiety and not being able to sleep lasted about 2 yrs. I have trouble sleeping alot still.the anxiety went away.. If I getit now I smoke weed and it helps.its not permanent but takes time

Hello, Ive been clean off pain killers for 24 monthsbro. and im so sorry but u can do it and it will passe rls shits and cramps take forever i know. you have to musle thru it

My Dr. is a psychologist he is telling me day 20 I should be over the withdrawls but I still have the runs anxiety RLB/RLS basically he says it's all brain rewiring now. I think I've read alot here and don't believe him, but i'm stuck the most I get is ambien for 2 hours of sleep. I think I messed up big time and should of cut back slowly but now it's to late I just pray this pain anxiety will stop. I went to a pain clinic I found out it's now being closed and the Dr. and Nurse are under lawsuits so like sinwater said I have to muscle through it I hope I can :( Thank you everyone

Your doctor is a dumbass just like 90% of the doctors I've been to. The doctor I'm seeing now the first day I saw him I told him I wanted 100% control over my taper and if he wasn't willing to do that I'd find another doctor who would.

If I ever had a dr tell me "you should be over wds" I'd probably want to punch him in the face. I just can't stand doctors sorry for the negativity.

Loperamide will delay wds but only the physical aspect of them. Your brain will still heal but your body won't heal as fast. I'd take the lope myself if I was on the verge of a relapse and it was just that bad. Not sleeping for 20 days will turn you into a horrible horrible person. It will seriously fuck with your head like I'm sure you're already noticing.

As an addict just remember you DO NOT deserve any of this shit. You need to hammer that into your brain. No addicts have any idea how awful wds are untill the first time they go through them. It will rock your world.

If you're having RLS really bad, make sure you are eating as much as you possibly can. During wds I NEVER wanted to eat, and that will magnify and make the wd process that much longer. Its traumatic enough for your brain/body to be deprived of something as potent as methadone, and if its being deprived of food too it just compounds everything so much worse. The lack of sleep is like the icing on the cake, I know its a nightmare just try to deal with it as much as you can because IT WILL get better, and when it DOES, you're going to cry thats how happy you'll be.

RLS is the one symptom that always was the worse for me. You can be over 95% of the wds, but still have that 1 symptom stick around for a long time. I would honestly give it another 10 days and I guarantee you things will improve. As far as sleep meds there is a way addicts get them very easily (w/out seeing a doctor OR dealer) but I'm not allowed to talk about it on here as it would be sourcing. You can also try experimenting with DXM or robotussin as I think it has a fairly long half life.

If you want to play with loperamide and take it just once, you can try out 4-6mg and see if it helps you. Sometimes you need a "vacation" from wds to recoup and recharge your battery so to speak, and when you stop taking the loperamide you'll be in a better mindset and will be able to push the envelope a little further.

Exercise also obviously helps (especially running for RLS) but its damn near impossible during this phase you're in right now so don't stress about it.
Definitely stress about EATING though, I really can't emphasize it enough. Getting 3-4 large servings of vegetables and protein has worked miracles for me before in wds. Here is one last tip and I can explain the chemistry why, but it would take too long. STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM SUGAR OR SIMPLE CARBS during wds. Anything that spikes your blood sugar, will spike your cortisol, then hours later when your cortisol drops, adrenaline fires off to compensate.

THIS WILL MAKE YOUR RLS A LOT WORSE! Trust me as I made that mistake too and when I took sugar/simple carbs out I felt a lot calmer.

Anyway, KEEP AT IT! Do not give up as you've made it REALLY far and you NEED to be PROUD of yourself more than anything. As hard as it will be, and as gay as this sounds, look in the mirror and smile and tell yourself "I rock", because you do. You're making one of the hardest decisions of your life, and you WILL love yourself if you can just fight through this bullshit.

Take care! - Bo

Thank you Bojangles and everyone it's reassuring hearing that it's still withdrawal and having support. I don't really have anyone to talk to about this and no one in my family has ever been dependant on anything that I know of, So I really don't know what I'm in for. I keep running through my head about the pain doctor and I remeber asking if this med would be hard to quit he said no just take what your supposed to and then taper if you decide to get surgery. :P yeah if only I could go back. You have not only helped me but my family aswell they are scared for me because were all in unknown territory and not sure what symptoms are or if it's something else going on. I've learned alot and when I get through this maybe I can help others. Thank You
