Ritalin and tolerance

In my head
I have ADD and will soon be prescribed ritalin. I in no way intend to abuse the ritalin to get high; I will take whatever dose he prescribes.

Now, let's say he has me take 10mg ritalin three times a day. In other words, 30mg a day. He then says that if you use the ritalin as prescribed and do not use it recreationally you will not develop a tolerance to the ritalin and it will continue treating your ADD for as long as you take it without the need to at some point increase the dose (which is, obviously, because he says there will be no tolerance).

What is your word on this? Do you think he is right? It could also be 45mg a day, but let's just say 10mg for now.

I think that's a great plan, as I'm about to also get my new script, and was thinking about the same dosage to not get a tolerance. I was at 50mg a day, and it looses effectiveness quickly than with lower dosages, in my experience. I'd say he's correct though with the dosage.. I'd also wait a while before you switch to 45mg, just to keep effectiveness.

I found that I didn't gain a tolerance at all to my ADHD meds. I have been prescribed to Concerta, Straterra, Vyvanse, Ritalin, and Adderal. Vyvanse was by far my favorite because of how productive it made me. But your doc knows what he's talking about so there's no need to worry. And also, Ritalin is probably the strongest ADD/ADHD meds IMO...have you checked out other meds ?
Keep your options open, nowadays there are a lot of people prescribed to ADD/ADHD meds and there are a lot better ones out there. I remember when I was prescribed to Ritalin, half of the other meds that I have been on hadn't even been created yet. Talk with your doctor if you don't like Ritalin because trust me, it's very strong.

Thanks to both of you. Here's another question: can I still work out on ritalin or whatever ADD med he gives me? I mean without having to worry about my blood pressure and such.

I have a prescription for ritalin, 20mg a day. The first time I took my prescribed dosage was definitely too much and had turned into a recreational dosage, I noticed a significant raise in heart rate and perspiration but nothing alarming. The other day I took my blood pressure when I ingested about 50mg of ritalin (not all at once but wthin 2 hours) and it was perfect, 118/80. (I am a 120lb female)
My heart rate when I was at the peak of the ritalin was about 100bpm. Still in normal range, just bordering on the high side. I'd say to take it easy and listen to what your body tells you. Also, if you get Ritalin immediate release pills then they don't last very long, about 2 hours, so as long as you don't take it right before you work out it shouldn't be a problem.
