I am currently a week off of risperidone after roughly two months of taking 1mg/day. The first few days of withdrawal were utter hell, but the symptoms have diminished greatly, and I'm feeling almost normal. This isn't the problem.
While on risperidone, cocaine proved nearly useless to me. There was a high, but it was very weak and short-lived...just not worth it. This didn't even make it to the list of side effects that drove me to discontinue the medicine, but I was definitely looking forward to enjoying the full benefits of coke once the risperidone was out of my system. So today, I gave it a try...just a couple of bumps...and it had an effect, all right, but NOT the effect I was hoping for. Very soon after, I was overtaken by chills. My muscles, particularly in my neck and face, tensed up, tongue went bone-dry, and breathing became difficult. The feeling in my head was hard to describe, but it felt as if I were about to have a seizure, and the shaking I was experiencing seemed to indicate the same. It was truly terrifying, and I was pretty sure I was about to die. I knew I hadn't overdosed, as I only did a small bit of coke, barely enough to even FEEL under normal circumstances, and I didn't THINK it was drug interaction, as I hadn't taken anything else. The symptoms I was experiencing were consistent with serotonin toxicity, which seemed unlikely with so little cocaine and no other drugs, but out of desperation, I took some benadryl. Surprisingly, it helped quite a bit. The attack persisted for awhile, but finally did cease, and I was left with no other conclusion to draw besides (thankfully mild) serotonin poisoning.
Risperidone is known for killing the high from cocaine, not making it dangerous to use, but it is also on the offender list of medications that cause serotonin poisoning. However, having not taken the pill for a week now, and with most of the withdrawal symptoms gone away, I would expect that there wouldn't be nearly enough risperidone in my system to interact in any way with the coke.
So here are my questions: First, has anyone else experienced anything like this, and second, if so, can anyone tell me how long it will be before it's all flushed out and coke becomes no longer hazardous?
