Just saw on the news that he shot himself.

If you haven't read any of his books, do yourself a favor.

Also, the cult classic Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was based on his book.

His writings are exciting and enlightning.

Why does it seem that some talented authors end up taking their lives? He must of been in a lot of pain or something.

rip hst

That is SAD SAD news.

Hunter S. Thompson, dead at 67

The man who gave us the phrase "Fear and Loathing," and one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

I know most fo you know who Hunter Thompson is. Certainly most of you have seen Johnny Depp portray him in "fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I also hope that many of you, like me, have read his books and know what an amazing writer and journalist he was - not to mention one of the craziest son of a bitches to ever walk the face of the earth ...

"Pitkin County Sheriff Bob Braudis, a personal friend of Thompson, confirmed the death to the News. Sheriff's officials did not return calls to The Associated Press late Sunday.

Juan Thompson found his father's body. Thompson's wife, Anita, was not home at the time.

Besides the 1972 drug-hazed classic about Thompson's time in Las Vegas, he is credited with pioneering New Journalism — or "gonzo journalism" — in which the writer made himself an essential component of the story.

An acute observer of the decadence and depravity in American life, Thompson wrote such books as Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail in 1973 and the collections Generation of Swine and Songs of the Doomed. His first ever novel, The Rum Diary, written in 1959, was first published in 1998.

Other books include Hell's Angels and The Proud Highway. His most recent effort was Hey Rube: Blood Sport, the Bush Doctrine, and The Downward Spiral of Dumbness" - from USA Today ... "

I discovered his books in high school and he is the reason I majored in journalism in college and went on to become a writer. I can also say that, without Thompson, I would have never had the guts to try Ecstasy.

He was born in my home state of Kentucky and a few years ago, I had the pleasure of actually meeting him, if only briefly to shake his hand. I am glad I had the chance and I am going to miss him

RIP

As I said in the other topic, its rather an appropriate quote.

It's a sad day indeed. I find it strange that he shot himself - not that I knew him intimately but I never thought that he'd commit suicide. I always imagined he'd go out in action or doing something notable.

O well, R.I.P Hunter S. Thompson

This is truly a sad day for anyone who indulges in drugs, enjoys literature, and has a sense of humour. He has given us some of the great pieces of modern literature and he was able to reveal hypocrisy and corruption wherever it lay and he always showed us what we had to fear and loath. He was a pioneer of consciousness and he was one of the great outlaw spirits of this century. I know that I will be partying hard this weekend in rememberence, I only wish that I could have met him. The world will miss him as a writer, as a voice against corruption and as a role model for those who wish to live their lives as they see fit, but I know that whether he's in heaven, hell or wherever else he's having fun. But we should all remember his life and how wild and savage it was, as he put it "A Man on the Move, and just sick enough to be totally confident".
RIP

I accidently started a new topic on this. This is very sad, somewhat shocking. Very touching words eltoro. He truly was an enlightend man. I'm to spaced to type right now. Tho your physical presence is no longer with us Hunter, you will live forever in the hearts and minds of those you touched.

Many people seem very surprised but suicide seems such a fitting end, in some ways. Burnt faster than everyone else.
