Riots Break Out In Berkley Over Gay Libertarian Immigrant Speaker

I would never expect for my European and Australian friends to understand why gun rights are important to Americans.

Don't underestimate your own explanatory powers or my ability to at least pretend to understand you. ;)

If its something to do with freedom, I'm very sceptical. But I'll await if you wish to have a crack at explaining what gun ownership means to you.

Still, id hope at a bl meetup you all would still want to have a toast and friendly conversation with me. For what it is worth, i do not own a gun...and you guys will always be family to me.

well I enjoy the freedom of not feeling the need to own any kind of weapon/firearm because crime is very low and even most criminals do not own guns. the closest I ever got to being robbed was two guys trying to get my wallet while asking me to light their cigs. When I realized what was going on, I walked away with my wallet on me and them doing nothing. and I was only 16 and they were much older. ;)

a functioning social security system feels good tbh

I guess conservatives and right wingers will have to try to regain some sense of dignity post-trump.
Good luck with that :)

like in the same way alcohol is?

Maybe you are responsible enough for cocaine and heroin, as are some experienced users. But freely accessible cocaine and heroin would be an utter nightmare. The should be decriminalized....but not available next to the swisher sweets at the gas station

But decriminalization wouldn't stop overdoses due to fentanyl being added or other very powerful opioids, and it wouldn't stop the crime that comes from pushing the drugs. The drugs would still be black market, and would attract the same types of people. Decriminalization only solves part of the issue. Perhaps it could be the first step.

I think we need full legalization and regulation of all drugs. This is radical, and would require other radical movements, focusing on educating and realigning ourselves to find the values we need to make it though. I don't think drugs should just be allowed to be sold next to the Swisher's, but there should be targeted, controlled outlets, and support available/required for the industry/society.

I don't own a gun, but I think it is a good idea to own one, like it's a good idea to have insurance. The fact that another man or group of men would feel it was their right to stop me from having a gun, gives me another reason to have a gun.

This is not an argument i wish to have because we all are secure in our beliefs and they are unwavering for most of us. I am glad a law abiding citizen has the right to buy and use a gun for self defense. I am glad few Americans support restricting the right to self defense with a gun.

I love to go to the range and shoot. Just a .22 for me, bigger guns make me nervous.
just hypothetically speaking, if guns were illegal how would we manage wild life preservation? bow and arrow/traps can work but hunting license consumption would have to increase by like 2000%
or should we just have the national guard go town to town with a mandatory body count? i'm being silly and i'm sure it can be done without citizens with fire arms but i'm sure lots of anti gun people don't consider the legitimacy of animal over population

white tail deer are a serious problem specially in the north east and from what i've read parts of the southwest are infested with wild boars. it's gotten so bad that there isn't even a limit to how many you can kill (the most deer a hunter can kill is usually 3 per year)

it makes perfect sense why metro NYC is extremely strict with gun laws, i hate to sound condescending but the countries total square mileage consists of many large/diverse regions...the government can really benefit from delegating more power to the states, let people relocate to where the rules fit their lifestyle

i honestly don't care about guns, i don't want one, but i know i'd rather be shot and killed than brutally stabbed or beaten to death by a blunt object

99% of violence occurs when an individual involuntarily has a psychological meltdown over 1 of 2 things: economics and/or emotion
there's no solution to ending desperate poverty folk from committing predatory crimes for survival
and the gradual accumulation of stress, anxiety and pain will continue to trigger acute maniacal rage and destruction will continue to occur, there's a potentially lethal weapon within pretty much everyone's reach at all times

fear: the tortuously consuming mechanism/process that i dream of society effectively managing one day

fear is nearly impossible to elude, but people(nobody specific) need to start admitting they either get a rush/fill an empty void through the fear they CHOOSE to generate and beg they get help before it's too late

As i said earlier, i do not own a gun and doubt i ever will as i am not a gun enthusiast. I let my buddy take me shooting (he has a lot of guns) and prefer to spend all my extra money on music production and psychoactive drug research.

Actually that is the best reason...but it is a given/obvious so i did not make the argument. Would Stalin, Mao, Hitler be mere footnotes in history had their subjects had guns?

This is all self evident to me.

Have pro-gun folks dropped the "to save us from government tyranny" line?
If so, why (or why now?)

Mao and Hitler rose to power in very different circumstances. But all of the above would have been better avoided if their 'subjects' had food.

I just think it's a sad distraction that Americans demand the right to own guns, but have abysmal healthcare and social welfare programs.
Guns don't save lives - they only take lives. It is their sole function.

What does save lives? Access to medical treatment.
That is something virtually every other developed country in the world at least attempts to provide people.
The USA is the world's richest nation, yet the people don't have universal healthcare.
And one of Trump's first priorities was to repeal the affordable healthcare act (flawed as "Obamacare" may have been) - and today it was announced that he's upping the military budget by $70 billion.

Seems perverse to me.

Guns are machines that kill. I don't think the arguments of the US gun lobby are the slightest bit logical.

I agree with most of your post (spacejunk), and I think medical care/health/education should be considered national defense, and prioritized, but I consider guns tools, and I think that it would be ideal to have access to them.

there's a high population of black bear in USA

they don't attack often, but if they get on top of a human it's game over, they eat you they don't just slash your throat or bash your head in, they get on top, and pick apart your body for over 2 hours

instead of saving my friend because guns are a no no(no other weapon works, you'd only be jeopardizing the both of your lives if you try), i'll just sit here and watch my long time friend get eaten slowly, asshole first, by a wild animal

but i'm probably talking to people who think animal lives are just as important as friends and families lives
