I didn't know if I should post this is OD or in Social, but I remember people talking about this movie in OD so here goes...
In the movie one of the characters IV's Heroin in the same spot every time, and eventually his arm starts turning purple and need to be amputated. I was just wondering is this from a collapsed vein, or if not what the hell was happening to his arm?

well, I read the short story and it was a bit clearer there. if I remember correctly, it was an open wound that got infected, never treated for infection - probably got gangrene. one of the characters remarks (i'm not sure if it's in the movie or not) on the smell of the wound, which is characteristic of gangrenous infection.
okay - cheery day!

I was kinda disappointed in a couple of technical points in that movie that I thought might be differnent in the book (I haven't read it). First of all, whenever they shoot up, a close up on their eyes shows their pupils dilating. That would be okay if they were shooting speed or coke, but it's pretty clear that they're doing smack which makes no sense because that would make their pupils constrict. And also, electric shock therapy is nothing like the way it's portrayed in the film. The patient is totally unconscious under general anesthesia and given a muscle relaxant/paralytic so they don't even really move. And it's used to treat depression, not psychosis. And a quick urine tox screen would've told the doctors exactly what was wrong with her.
But otherwise it was a great movie.

Pretty intense movie, highly reccomended to see. There was one problem that I was having with the whole movie and that is the same that the person above mentioned.
The movie was portraying a heroin addicition of the star, but with every shoot-up, it showed their eyes dialating, not constricting. And the way the characters acted seemed more like coke to me than smack. This may seem like a stupid point, but I kept thinking about this through the whole movie.

I was quite envolved w/ a thread on this film's inconsistencies too. Oddly enough, i just rented the VHS for the first time, and finally noticed proof that they are definately doing heroin (fentanyl b/c its white). The 'main' character makes a reference to one of the bigger drug deals being made to grab Skag, which is defined on everything2.com as
"Archaic, ca. late 60s and 70s black and counter-culture slang term for heroin, back when it was one the ghetto drug of choice. Also common in contractions, such as skaghead. Since passed almost totally out of usage in favor of modern terms such as smack."
The old thread got rather technical and in depth, if anyone's interested they can find it @ http://www2.bluelight.ru/ubb/Forum19/HTML/007720.html

Since they keep talking about a pound of pure, why the fuck do you think it's fentanyl. That much fentanyl would kill the entire population of Coney Island! If it's white, eyes dilate, and they act coked out--maybe it's coke. Although Darren Aronofsky states that it is no drug in particular. But it was definitely influenced by the heroin slang. The movie was not made for heroin addicts or bluelighters, and most people equate drugs with dilated pupils and don't know that heroin isn't really white.
The doctors knew she was on diet pills, but her mind was completely gone. While EST would be done under anesthesia, they do it for only the most serious psychosis that doesn't respond to treatment. A depressed person who just lost half their brain would go on a homocidal/suicidal rampage. They mainly use SSRI's now, as MAOI's had some serious side effects.
Expect to hear PhreeX bitch that the movie had a negative portrayal of an amazing drug and then move this to social.

I dont have any reason to bash the movie.. as others have said, it's a "heroin movie" - people would be confused if they showed pupils constricting - why? People wouldn't have any idea why that was happening, because DRUGS = BIG PUPILS...
ALL heroin movies will tell the tale of some junkies.. they live in filth, they are all in horrible health, and a few of them will die my the time the movie ends..
You watch movies for their entertainment value, not as a source of factuall information..

Yea--throughout the whole movie i thought they were on coke too --but then figuring how they were continually wired day and night before the next shoot up scene came again, i definitely thought it was crystal they were taking.
The thought of heroin being the drug didnt even make a bold appearance until the withdrawal scenes came about...i don't know if coke/speed withdrawal is that frantic when fiending for a next hit...
Another thing that got me:
When the olderwoman initially tried to explain to her doctor how everything was wrong, he didn't even give her the time of day for a checkup when she was obviously extremely confused.
Would that EVER happen in actuality? What was the deal with this??
I was stunned figuring if that ever has, knowing how many people are taking diet pills like her.
This portrayal, Phreex, was not soley for entertainment. Most films aren't. They're reflections of society
Hell, shit that disturbing and realistic has passed the mark of general entertainment anyway.

Wanna see a good documentary about heroin abuse....and some crack/speed abuse? See HBO's special on it. I totally forget the name of it SORRY!, but it was fantastic. Of course it only showed the downside of drug use.
The freaky part for me is, that it was filmed within about a 15 block radius of where I lived in SF. Those people in SF certainly aren't shy about shooting up or smoking their crack pipe in front of you.
Like I said, great documentary, though it only shows that heroin is an evil deadly addiction. I believe all the people that they follow around either die, get AIDS, or just stay horribly addicted and live on the streets.
It was the first time I fully realized that drug addiction is a disease and not a crime. I'd been teetering on that for sometime, but after wathcing this and watching some of these people try soooo hard to pull themselves up from up addiction - only to continually fail was pretty painful.

yeah, the DILATING thing was kinda confusing..
also, whenever the LETO character goes to the DOC about his arm at the end, and the DOC walks away in HORROR, does he cal the cops??if he does, as i supposed he did because the PIGS showed up, did they haul LETO DUDE in because he had TRACK MARKS?that didnt make total sense to me..
all these HEROIN movies are the same..i have been hearing this movie was PHENOMENAL, so i bought it on DVD yesterday and have to say i was DISAPPOINTED..its all the SAME SHIT, guys pawning off TV SETS to get their "FIX"..they tear their rooms apart looking for some cash or DOPE...they usually always end up DEAD or in JAIl, or just MISERABLE..they have never shown the RESPONSIBLE section of HEROIN users..i know several people who use the drug in an intelligent manner..they have good jobs, don't live on the STREETS, and YES they have been using for over 5 years..why doesn't one of these documantary shows show this portion of society??it would stir up too much shit for the DIRECTOR and the movie would be called "PRO DRUG" blah blah..
i also didnt understand the way the characters acted while high...damn, i have never got that feeling from taking OPIATES(HEROIN,OXY,NUBAIn,VICODEN)i get high, but not that fucking high..
the movie is very OVERRATED..

oh yeah, the movie is FAR from entertaining..it is NASTY to watch...i don't think ill ever watch it again...
i was surprised that they portrayed the MOTHER in such TURMOIL over using DIET PILLS...i mean,
she was fucking DELIRIOUS at the end..didn't add up to me..
that DOCUMANTARY on HBO is called "BLACK TAR HEROIN"...it is ok, but like i said, it shows the SAME things every other heroin special has showed..PEOPLE living on the streets, SUCKING DICK to get their DOPE...BORING...it is sad to think people actually live like that though..
ya wanna watch a very REALISTIC movie on DRUGS, get "TRAFFIC"..this movie was very good, and very ACCURATE on the WAR ON DRUGS..it just shows how POINTLESS the drug war really is..GREAT ACTING as well..

another good one for those of you who want to see the "responsible heroin users" is Permanent Midnight w/ Ben Stiller playing this heroin addict who moves OUT to L.A. to escape the New York drug life.
this IS a good film. it is about the writer who helped get shows like Alf off the ground.
and for those who say they don't get THAT high off opiates, maybe you should take a break for a while...
bump some k...
dance like marlon wayans...
"Naturally"

i never got that fucked up off of OPIATES...never have, even my first times..i get high, but not to where i don't know whats going on around me..i am and always have been able to function fully while high on OPIATES..its a big PLUS for me..
