Requiem For A Dream

i can't sympathize with her character, I don't see why I should? She directed her problems onto Harry, and also proved later on that she didn't care for him much at all. If you payed attention to her character, they portray her throughout the whole movie as being one of the main problems in Harry's despair.

what about Her despair when she sleeps with that(first) guy - upon harry's suggestion/encouragement huh?? ok so i'm not starting a war here, obviously our opinions differ, but i related to marion's character/feelings/relationship with boyfriend so much that it scared the fuck out of me, perhaps that's why i am being so sympathetic towards her. oh and don't you see that her smiling in the end makes it even sadder?? I'm sure that was the point.

Abby: point noted. you got me on this one, for some reason i had totally forgot about that scene... so i can see your point of view... they both did the same thing to each other. I think I was exactly the opposite of you, sympathizing the most for the other two guys.
by the way i didnt mean to sound that harsh in the first place hey...

This movie is the most horrific I think I've ever seen. I walked out of the cinema feeling horrible, but I guess that was the point. Made me think about some things that I need to address in my life.

okies...i've been reading this thread for a while, but haven't posted anything about it...i dunno why, cos since i saw it, it has affected me. i saw a preview screening with a good friend of mine, who is fairly against my drug use. she is also a pretty intense and tohughtful person, and i think it fucked her up a bit.
but last night i had a conversation with her about the movie, and discussing wether any of the 4 actually achieved their dream?
i think in a very aronofsky way they all did.
but i would be interested to see what people think about the movie apart from the portrayal of drug use.

Actually i saw it on valentines and cried from about halfway through until the end, and needless to say, it put a huge dampner on the rest of the night. But as for the movie, I think they got lost in pursuit of a dream, a hope, a feeling.

Went and saw this on the weekend. All I have to say is: FUCKING EXCELLENT.
From cinematography, to script, to story, to soundtrack - the whole lot of it was downright fucking awesome.
I walked out of the cinema feeling like I was going to throw up, which I'm sure was Darren Aronofsky's contention.
And on the point of 'laughing' - some of it was very black comedy. I found myself chuckling at the scene where the old lady fully trips out, and finds the camera crew invading her loungeroom. I wasn't laughing at her predicament - I was laughing at what was actually happening. However, there was not a single hint of any laughter in the final 20-30 minutes...
Like someone said earlier, it was the old lady I felt most sorry for because in her case, it wasn't self-inflicted. She didn't know what was happening.
This film will be with me for a long time to come...

Finally got to see it on the weekend with Dan, and goddamn it was a great movie!
Kinda easy going at the start, but from what I'd heard I knew it was gonna kick near the end, and when it did it sure didn't hold back...
At some points I even forgot how uncomfortable sitting in the front row can be...
One of the best parts of the movie was that it didn't restrict its agenda to illegal drug use, but included other kinds of addiction, including prescribed medication... Gambling would have been another good addition... It also didn't label the drugs involved but left it open to speculation, but more importantly, didn't narrow the field down too much, so that those watching would consider all drugs when thinking about the messages the movie sends... Too bad alcohol wasn't included... I guess its asking a bit much for everything to be included tho...
So who wants to go see it again? ...I'm thinking back row centre this time, my back hurts

Dan: I totally agree that there was elements of black comedy in the movie.
However u know how u can read people's laughter. There was no doubt, in my mind at least, that the laughter was the kind of juvenile giggling u hear when someone embarrasses themselves, falls over, puts salt on a snail, that sort of crap.
It was clearly naive giggling; the people didnt understand what the lady was going through; and hence she just seemed like the tortured snail, shrivelling away, albeit in a very dark comedic manner.
In fact i found it the most shocking part of the movie; as it showed that many people in our society would not understand or get to grips with the very real horror facing such people and hence, as is prob true in a city such as ours, their plight goes unnoticed, or at best, snickered at

The old lady may not have fully understood what was happening to her, but it certainly *was* self inflicted, by pure definition of the term.
All of the characters deserved what happened to them because they let it happen -- however sad or disturbing that may be -- and they learnt one fuck of a valuable lesson, even if they hadn't yet realised when we saw them last.
In terms of them achieving their dreams, I quote from a review: . "Requiem for a Dream is not about people who fail to accomplish their dreams or are too weak to achieve them. All the principal characters of the film grasp -- if not momentarily -- what they originally envisioned would be paradise; to lose weight and fit into that old red dress, to party and make easy money. Whether it’s greed, or weakness of mind, or susceptibility that leads to their downfall, boy do they fall."
OK, that was actually from my review. Some bluelighters know that, one the side, I review films. Feel free to check out the review and tell me what you think

This movie had too many to implications, meanings and subtle hints to mention.
I found the movie quite intense from start to finish, and strangely it was as if my body was too tense, because at some of the more intense points I found myself relaxed, breathing deeply.
At one point I concentrated on purely the sound, and noticed phasing of pan and frequency. It reminded me of some of the theta/alpha state phasing noise sounds which are used to induce a more receptive/suggestible/relaxed state. I am not sure if this was meant to be there, but there were a few points during the movie in which these effects were quite noticable.

I just saw this movie last night. And all I can say is WOW! It left me feeling physically ill. This would have to be one of the most amazing movies I have ever seen.

A guy from interstate told me about this movie.. He said that he had never seen anything that had disturbed him as much as this movie had. I took that as a challenge

. now ive seen a lot of disgusting and shocking clips (people eating shit etc) and i thought i was numb to shocking things... untill i saw requiem.
This is the best movie i have ever seen. Then i went and saw it again. It was just as good, if not better, the second time around. The last 20 min are fucking insane, my heart was beating a million miles an hour, and i had a white knuckle grip on the chair...
I took my girlfriend to see it the second time round, after a bit of convincing, and she couldnt talk for about 30 min after the movie, cos she was in shock..
I cant wait for this one to come out on DVD either.. I already got the soundtrack from napster, its got all the music from the movie, played in the order it appears on the film. its mostly repeated tracks over and over again, but they just get faster, and more intense as the soundtrack goes on.
two thumbs up

i have the sound track... its really wierd, it has that main violin piece over and over but slightly different. ive listened to the cd about 30 times already and im not sick of it... brilliantly put together, even more so than the pi sound track i'd say...
jared leto is a fucking great actor, proved himself in this one for sure.
go see it!

.you've gotta lose it.
.to find it.

The main part that i noticed was that how they all curled themselves up into a foetal position even tho one was lobotimised. Read some psychological thing about curling up into a foetal position as a cry out for compionship and lonliness.
I guess when i watched that film i was experiencing emotions of lonliness and that made it even more significant to me.
Good show...

I have to say Darren Aronofsky has done a great job translating Hubert Selby Jr.'s novel to screen. I don't think i spoke for a good hour after the movie. I just contemplated the movie, related it to the book, and realised how devastated and depressed i felt for the charaters. I still think Sara Goldfarab's story of diet pill addiction and T.V. addiction is the most disturbing. Simply because of how easy it can happen to anyone.
But if you liked Reqriuem for a Dream take a look at the book. Of course the movie left parts out, the book has more character development, ect. Also another book by Selby Jr. is 'Last Exit to Brooklyn'. This is a full on novel, hard to read because it is poorly written (written how'd you talk in slang, brooklyn slang). By the end of 'Last Exit' i hated the book for what it told me, one of the stories, i can't get over the ending. But thats why it's a great book.
But yeah my point is Selby Jr. is the guy you should be praising, he was also in the movie! Prision officer yelling at Tyrone(marlon waynes) at the very end. Also Harry's mum was the mum in the Exorcist!

i absolutely love this movie.
briliant cinemetograghy.
does anyone know if the UNEDITED version will ever be available on TAPE, and not just DVD?

Hmmmm.. Saw it last night and while I was quite moved, it seemed a little bland to me.. I might have to read the book.....
What I found bland was the simplicity of the almost propaganda-like moralistic ideas behind the story... The film DOES have a very important message but I feel it is imposed on the viewer in a very crude manner..
My idea of a stimulating film is not a feature length TAC advertisement. This film induces fear, disgust and shock much like the (in)famous TAC and Quit campaign ads...
Maybe I'm a pussy and just couldn't stand the heat, but thats just my two cents...
by the look of the above posts, it would seem I'm about to be ripped to shreds
