Soooooo,
Doctor called me today and said he’s going to take me off the oxycodone soon. I have been on it for like 5 years at this point, but I’ve been slipping under the radar. He didn’t want me to stay on long when I first came to him as a patient, but here we are 3 years later and he’s still been filling it. Anyway, like I said, he said he’s going to need to take me off of them soon. I’m assuming DEA reasons etc and I’m not severely handicapped from my back and hips but it’s pretty damn bad especially at night when I’m laying down all night in bed, my hips and back kill me, I am also accustomed to the nice feeling I get before bed when I take it and it helps me sleep soooo much better. What is a good medicine that will do the same I can ask him to sub it for? I take 20mg and I also take 40mg baclofen with it. Any insight would be awesome as I am SUPER nervous to come off this as it helps sooooo much. Thanks guys!

I am a former drunk who ruined his liver, also and mainly I was given a year to live and ended up getting what the state regarded as the max according to the guidelines.

Mainly due to chronic pancreatitus. The 60mg of morphine a day only helped some also 30mgs of oxycodone now 40mg after I voluntarily gave up the morphine ER, which only helped a little, due to my messed up liver. I got the 10mg boost when I gave up the morphine.

According to my state guidelines which dropped( I live in a mainly blue but an occasionally swing state) They dropped the 90mg morphine equivalent and lowered to 60mg just around the time I dropped the morphine script. ( because it did help some but I got better. My state considers oxycodone to be 1.5 times as strong as morphine and is processed in the kidneys.

I am right at the limit and have been at the limit( actually the guidelines are a very strong suggestion, not necessarily the law. But my doctor told me this is a different time or I could give you more.

However, because I have been good, more or less. I have been on opiods regularly for eight years and before that a year of a script or 28 x 10mg everytime except once that I ended up in the hospital. ( I take the good ones, with no acetaminophen or Tylenol or paracetamol.
At the worst point I spent 2- 3 weeks at the hospital and was given a year to live. Without a liver transplant. My pancreas is my main issue, with pain though, but other pain too.

I wasn't ready to quit or abide by the terms needed to get on the organ donor list. So I took a hard pass on the new to me, liver option.

My tolerance has gone up yes. However the pain has lessened considerably and have been on oxycodone regularly for about 8 years and with the exception of 10mg boost after I wanted off, of the morphine I have been taking it regularly for 8 years and 8 years past what was supposed to be my expiration date. lol. Thank you ALMIGHTY GOD.

I have been pretty good about, not misusing my oxycodone and have taken the same dose with a the exception of a 10mg bump after ditching the morphine script( this was my choice and it made my doctor very happy). Along with switching my benzo script too the weaker by half: dose of Valium I take along with a low dose of gabapentin and a non scheduled medication or two.

Anyways 8 years I have had it, I got a refill called in recently after some blood work and a piss test. My doctor( who is not a Dr. Feelgood by any stretch, but who will treat pain accordingly and within the state guidelines); asked me basically rethortically, after you began taking you pain meds( which were needed, I gave up booze mostly and then became allergic to them). He asked me after I had been in and out of the hospital on a sometimes weekly basis.
"Since you have been taking your pain meds" (and not drinking really, I did a some here there before becoming allergic) how many times have you been to the hospital" I said besides visiting my sick father before he died? He said " of course I mean besides that". I said zero. He said " There you have it, you don't drink I will help you with your pain".he said.

Again not to preach but thank you ALMIGHTY GOD, I became allergic to booze to the point that I couldn't drink beer hardly and after choking down one measly can of domestic piss water ice beer would itch uncontrollably, to the point that no amount of benadryl or antihistamines before or after could not stop the uncontrolled itching which lasted what seemed like hours and I actually had to fight to get alcohol in me and make it stay down. Also I couldn't even catch a buzz.

Honestly not to preach this came within days of me repenting of my seriously bad drunkeness and begging God for help to control and stop my drinking of over 20 years to the point of near death from how much I consumed. Of course I couldn't barely function, if it would have not been for my now deceased immediate family, I would have probably died in a gutter somewhere.

If taken properly, opiods, used for legit pain and taken at the same dose regularly can help for years and years.
I am middle aged and don't have any affinity towards opiods, other than pain relief. Call me old fashioned, but I was an alcohol and nicotine guy, my drugs of choice. I gave up booze. Gave up nicotine a long time ago and only started about a year ago, and smoke very little compared too most smokers.

Hopefully your pain will subside, but if it doesn't hopefully you can get your meds and control any urge if you have one, to abuse it and take more. Hopefully your doctor is like mine. Willing to help you, but not a pill pushing quack or the type too suddenly cut you off. Don't abuse them. Also as many have said here on Bluelight: Avoid Kratom; because it will according too many on this site; raise your tolerance to opiods sky high ( no dumb pun intended) Good luck.

I just reread your post, could you try almost begging and saying it has worked? That you, don't abuse it?
Could ask him why? Could you tell him that it is the only way for me too sleep without drinking myself to sleep; that last one is an absolute last resort and you really have to be careful about mentioning alcohol but if it is true and he won't budge, it is your call.

I can't tell you whom to go see in terms of the doctors characteristics, because the truth is not a defense against getting a ban here. Trust me I know, and so do all the mods and administrators here, they know me. Political Correctness over truth. I do know for many reasons, that I will not openly discuss here or anywhere online, but if he doesn't then maybe you should find a new doctor; one who will help you. Again good luck, sorry I kind didn't read your post as correctly the first time as I should have. Basically, I need to read slower and more carefully.

I wanted advice on how to deal with coming off morphine, that's why I became a member of Bluelight and there were people who were a great help, however my doctor already knew what comfort meds to prescribed me.
I am not in a position to risk really saying anything. But good luck and see what advice you can get from other members. If they are allowed or willing. Also check past posts on similar issues on past threads and in other forums and see what you can find out. There is a wealth of good info, and some not so good but they usually delete it or if I am in bad mood and I know to be bad, I will let them know, I chewed out a member the other day for giving bad advice. This person quickly took it down, but tried to go after me, tried.

Good afternoon,

There are quite a few other drugs available that would substitute the Oxycodone in the way you are seeking. However, if your doctor wants to take you off / reduce your oxycodone script, he is very unlikely to prescribe another S2 / Controlled drug unless it is for tolerance purposes.

You could ask for Pregabalin? That isn't an opioid but does help with pain / sleep and can be euphoric

What were you going to suggest? I was thinking about asking for tramadol or gabapentin.

I was going to suggest other S2 narcotics if it were for tolerance purposes.

Tramadol would be a potential if doc is happy prescribing other opioids.

With regards the GABA's, Pregabalin is much much better than Gabapentin. If memory serves it is around 7 x the potency
