I'm concerned about a friend who was prescribed Remeron. He's having horrible side effects and his doctor does not seem to really understand and just tells him to take less. When he takes less, he has horrible anxiety. I'm trying to find a different doctor.

Does anyone have any suggestions, experiences with Remeron or how to withdrawal from this medication.

Thank You in advance.

Sounds strange, usually there are no major problems when discontinuing remeron except for insomnia. I have tapered down on it several times without any issues. Just take it slow and taper down?

That's not really accurate. As with most antidepressants, you can't predict how difficult it will be to stop taking them. It really varies quite extreme betweens individuals. Some have no problem at all and might not even need to taper down, but there are many people who have serious problems when they try to stop taking mirtazapine, even if they taper it down slowly. Maybe not as extreme as with venlafaxine but it definitely can cause horrible "withdrawal"-symptoms and insomnia is just one of them.

There's not much you can do about it in my experience. I think tapering slowly, for example if you take 15mg, you can go to 11,25mg for some time, then 7,5mg, then 3,75mg etc. Just take your time and do it slow, that way you have the beste chances to make it through the process without having too much problems if you're one of the unlucky individuals that get this horrible symptoms when quitting this med.

Actually I never got completely off mirtazapine, but i'm soon going to try. I can taper down to extremely low doses pain free (less than 5 mg) but when I drop it out I just won't sleep. I've been on it about 5 years. Venlfaxine, which I am also withdrawing from, is a lot more tricky. Couple years ago I basically CT'd it and it took a good month to get myself back. But even it is manageable by titrating the dose down very slowly, that's the key to basically any withdrawal. Never CT or take too big steps down, it's not worth it.

I am on Remeron for insomnia ( also valium 10 TID ) and my doc tells me it's a "great antidepressant" I see NO anti-depressant qualities to this drug, just makes you tired as hell and I sleep most of the time but wake up to panic attacks... Does anyone agree? disagree? Is this bullshit drug GIVING me anxiety?

It's just a sleep aid for me, never had any other effects regardless of dose.
