My friends dog was detoxing from a 4 month opiate addiction. After trying to go cold turkey and finding it unbearable, he decided to use suboxone to taper. His taper/detox schedule was as follows:
Day1-2mg
Day2-2mg
Day3-1mg
Day4-1mg
day5-0.5mg
day6-0.5mg
day7-0.25mg

On day 8 and he was feeling restless anxious and lethargic and relapsed the next three days with 2, 30mg oxys each day. Did he ruin all his work with the sub detox? will he have to face more withdrawals? What should he do? it is day 4 and he has had nothing since last night

This is my first post, forgive me if it is out of place my friends dog is just really upset about this.

IMO, I don't think he ruined all that work because he has suboxone still in his system & isn't hooked back on roxies. I'd tell him to pick back up at 1mg for a few days.. I've relapsed too & just picked up at a low dose of bupe (suboxone) again.. what was his method for taking it? Sublingually or intravenously, etc..

Sublingually but he only had 1 8mg strip left and does not want to get withdrawals from the bupe, he has heard that if you take it for extended periods of time (over 2 weeks) you will get withdrawals that last much longer than full antagonist opioids. How should he wean down to avoid the withdrawals he faced on day 8 after his dose of 0.25mg the night before?
-thanks for the help!

Hey AredGoneBlue, welcome to Bluelight.

I don't think that all that hard work is ruined, it should be possible to continue on with the taper. Relapsing is hard on your mind, but you should not let it deter you. These things take time.

Also, we don't use things like SWIM or 'my friends dog' here

Further, the use of ineffective self-incrimination avoidance terms is forbidden. Terms include but are not limited to: SWIM; my dog; my cat; a mouse; my pet hamster.

I understand. but with ample supplies as perviously stated (one 8mg sub left) what would be a taper schedual that has worked for others?

If he only has 1 strip left, I'd cut it into 6 pieces and make that thing last as long as possible! I'm not going to tell you what else *I* would do because that's a whole new ball game.. I'd try 1/6th for 2 or 3 days, then go down from there how he was doing it. I know my doc said that to taper people he starts off having his patients take a dose every other day, & decreases the strength as trims goes by but its way slower than how y'all are doing it. For instance if he saws taking 3x day, he'd need to drop down to 2.5x day for 30days, then 2x day for 30 days, etc. Then when he got to taking .5mg once a day, he'd start taking .5mg every other day. If I were him I'd space it out as long as he can between each dose & take the smallest amount possible to be comfortable. Just know that there is going to be some discomfort at the end regardless of how he does it, I think. I tapered down once before and did it as described above & for the first few days I was alright but after that, I was anxious, very lethargic, and emotional for a good few weeks. BUT it wasn't anything compared to full blown withdrawal. Pls keep me posted how he does!! xx

Honestly i dont think a couple more days of sub is gonna matter. Stop the opiates feel nasty for a couple days and try and move on with your life.
