redosing codeine for painkilling effects

Hi, I have UTSFE and there is plenty material pertaining to codeine redose and the consensus appears to be that because of the way that codeine metabolizes itself, between 4-6 hours is recommended before recreational re-dose.

In my case, I am not looking to get high. I just sometimes take small amounts of codeine (30-90mg) to kill pain. I took 60mg about 2 hours ago and it was not sufficient at all, as I am still in a lot of pain. My question is this: for redosing for pain killing effects, is it effective to redose earlier than the 4-6 hour mark? If so, by how much?

thank you

Yeah, I know this is by far not the most exciting of topics, but I would still apreciate some input on whether early redose for painkilling effects is worthwhile. Anecdotal experience is welcome. Also, a basic pharmacological answer would be cool as well (I am a novice currently reading Stahl's ;) ).

And yea, I know codeine is cheap and all, but I want to avoid testing on myself as much as possible because I am taking in a lot of APAP these days and want to minimize the amounts I take in, even CWEd.

Hey brother, yes you should be fine! There is evidence that some of the analgesic properties of codeine come from codeine-6-glucorinide as well, so even if CYP2D6 is inhibited and you can't get any more morphine out of it, you should still get some pain killing effects. Even codeine itself may have some weak analgesic properties. :)

No problems, I could talk about codeine all day I love it so much. :D

EDIT: Also, could you post back and tell us how it goes? If your analgesia increases?

Well if I'd gotten the answer this morning when I posted the question I definitely would have, but I ended up dosing at the recommended 6 hour interval (I bumped the thread tonight cause I still wanted an answer, as I`m bound to be in this situation again, though currently I feel fine). Though, if I do have pain problems tomorrow, I`ll be sure to experiment and report back :)

Poking around google quickly - does it seem reasonable that codeine euphoria is related more closely to morphine, and the painkilling properties to codeine-6-glucorinide?

The pain killing properties are probably more related to morphine, though without much research into codeine-6-glucorinide it's hard to say. The euphoria definitely comes from the morphine, I can tell you that. :)
