Stimulants Recreational vs. Therapeutic (Focalin XR, along with other methamphetamines)

I have ADHD, and am prescribed Focalin XR. My therapeutic dose is 20 mg, and I have railed up to 40 mg before. I haven't really abused this drug on a lot of numerous occasions (maybe just in the single digits?). I have stopped taking the drug altogether (I've been off of it for a few days now) because I have decided that I'm not going to abuse it anymore. I found out that I am basically screwing myself by snorting this drug, as long as I want to use it for my ADHD. If I want to get my tolerance back where it needs to be to use it therapeutically again, how long do I need to stay off the drug? Will it go down if I start taking the pill as instructed, or do I need to just stop taking it altogether? As I said, I haven't been abusing it for a long time.

What do you recommend I do? I won't die without it in school, but last week when I didn't take it, I was back to my regular loudmouth, hyperactive self and my friends noticed it. My friend who takes Concerta said it was very obvious I didn't take my meds.

You just made a thread on this same topic, in the future try to group your questions about the same drug in the same thread. Thanks!

To benefit from it therapeutically, just resume oral dosing. The problem with methylphenidate based products is that A) IMO, they're inferior to amphetamines, and B) they're too short acting and C) are not bioavailable enough via the oral ROA.

Tolerance is not so big of a deal with stimulants compared to other drugs, particularly CNS depressants such as benzodiazepines and opioids, where tolerance plays a huge role. For example, I've been prescribed methamphetamine at the same dose for years, I've never needed to raise my dose due to tolerance. Totally different story with my prescribed opioid narcotics though.

If you snort the drug, I've heard it your tolerance goes up very fast. If I snort the same dose of what I take therapeutically, will I have to worry about tolerance?

What if I snorted a significanly lower dose than my therapeutic does? What would happen? I will soon have access to very low doses of IR tablets for after school... any thoughts?

Do you absolutely need to abuse your medication?

If you keep doing this you will eventually find no symptomatic relief from the maximum prescribed dose.

I don't need to abuse it, but that rush you get could be convenient for me at times. Would I be able to keep my therapeutic dose working if I abused the low dose IR tablets that I will have starting tomorrow? I don't know how low they are, but they are going to be a very low dose for after school.

What if I abused the exact same amount as my therapeutic dose? Would that screw up my tolerance as well?

It's just about time for me tot take my 5 mg instant release pill. If I decide to snort it instead, will this affect the tolerance that I have on the 20 mg extended release pills in the morning?

Also, will there be any noticeable difference from snorting it and eating it?

On another note, will vacationing from this drug in all forms on the weekend help to reduce my tolerance?

I wanna know how I can reduce tolerance, and how long does it take to go up? What if I do very low doses of the drug through harder hitting ROAs? If I do IR through the nose and XR through the mouse, will the IR affect the tolerance of the XR? Basically, I want to be able to keep my tolerance at a level where I can benefit everyday from the the 20 mg XR pills in the morning while ocasionally snorting the 5 mg IR tablets, or even my XR tablets. Is this possible?

Stop triple posting. It's all dextro-methylphenidate, meaning that no matter how you consume it, the amount of drug that makes it into your bloodstream varies depending on ROA, and tolerance is built on the levels of drug that make it to your bloodstream, I'm not quite sure how else to put it.

^right.
In the end, what effects tolerance is how much of the drug actually makes it into your brain, and that will vary depending on how it is taken. For instance, when one injects a drug(don't do this), they get 100% absorption. Now, if they take the same dose of the drug orally, and the oral route only absorbs 50%, than its basically equivalent to 1/2 of the IV dose (though there are other factors that might make up for this loss of active ingredient, such as duration of effect).

I think I am basically good on this topic now, but how do you go about lower tolerance? What if I didn't take the drug at all on the weekend? Or a single day? Since it is not going into my bloodstream, does this automatically lower my tolerance?
