Well, first of all... if this is not the right place for this post, and it should be in dark side or perhaps part of the bupe megathread, I apologize.
On to the issue. I've been on Bupe maintenance for 8 years now - 16 mg daily for most of that time, but sometimes only 12mg daily in the past year. I was on Suboxone for most of the time, but I recently switched to generic Subutex due to the much lower cost... should have asked my doctor for that years ago. Suboxone is ridiculously expensive.
Anyway, up until a few months ago I never even attempted to use bupe "recreationally" simply because I assumed it was impossible due to my long-standing tolerance and bupe's actions as a partial rather than full agonist and the resulting "ceiling effect." However, one night, when I was experiencing some anxiety issues (I actually have those daily as I suffer from OCD) I decided to take an extra 8 mg sublingual tablet. To my surprise... I felt something. It was mild, to be sure, very mild... but it felt nice.
So a few nights later I decided to experiment with a higher dose again, but this time crushing up the tablets and snorting them. This worked even better. Again, the high was mild, but it was there - there was even a slight rush. That warm opiate glow that I hadn't experienced for years and wasn't sure I'd ever experience again was back. It's been a couple of months now and I'm snorting the stuff 3-4 times a week at dosages ranging between 20 - 40 mg (usually about half sublingual and half snorted), and I have cravings to snort it every single day. Going over that dosage range is futile and as expected due to bupe's ceiling, provides no additional effects save maybe mild nausea.
In order to not run out of my script early I simply use less on some days so I have extra to snort on other days. This is getting more difficult for me though. The high is even milder now than it was at the beginning of this little experiment, but I continue to crave it. It's really only ~20 minutes worth of warmth, analgesia and anxiolysis, followed by an hour or two of a "not quite baseline" state and then its gone. The duration has also been getting shorter and shorter lately.
My point I guess is this: has anyone else experienced anything similar? Most people on bupe maintenance say its impossible to get high, and while that's sort of true because the high can't at all compare to a real, full-on opiate high... a pleasant buzz is attainable for me.
I guess I'm just going to have to force myself to stop doing this and get back to regular sublingual use. My opiate habit was a small one back when I first got on Bupe (mostly just hydro), but bupe saved my life in a lot of ways - it was the most effective anti-anxiety medication and anti-depressant I'd ever come across, and at that point in my life that sort of thing was desperately needed. I'm not happy that strong drug craving has been reintroduced into my life. I also worry about my nose, although crushed up Subutex tablets aren't painful to snort (unless you rail a big line all at once) and I haven't experienced any congestion or anything - still, its obviously not healthy. Any thoughts, advice, anything at all?
Sorry for the long post.
