just started methadone maintenance program today (30 for 30$ promotion).

A little of my background... became addicted to heroin (snorts only) roughly 9 months ago, got up to a 100$ day habit just to not get dope sick. Things started going downhill and he decided to get clean.

the questions are worry with methadone being something that he would be just as hooked on and hard to get off of, is it possible to dose and taper off within the 30 days? He cannot afford the fee to go daily after promotion ends...

Would just like General info from others that have done methadone maintenance and their experiences overall wth it. Thanks

Hey glassjaw and welcome to BL:)

Methadone is pretty hard to detox. If it were me I would taper 5mg every two weeks until I was off. He could try and taper down in thirty days, but im not sure how successful that will be. Methadone programs are for profit businesses so the 30 for 30 makes sense.

If i were your brother I would also look into and attend some form of substance abuse counseling.

Here is some good information on methadone.

I hope he can figure this out and the best way for him to is to put his recovery as his number one priority in life.

Man these are tough questions.
I was on methadone maintenance.
Its definetly the cheaper route as far as daily expense. And it will help keep him from being sick and satisfy his cravings.
But I wont lie it is just as addictive and having recently kicked it I would say more.
Im not saying to do or not to do anything.
Its a choice only your brother can make.
Personally I am glad I chose to get on md and glad I chose to get off. If that makes sense.
Md has its pros and cons.
Pros it keeps you from having to search for a drug all day and spend all your money. Allows you to be mostly normal as it "stabilizes" your habit. Con is it can be very long and hard to come off once your ready to get off.
The clinic will down play any cons.
Imo it is very possible to take for short time and detox, but clinic is not going to go along with that.
Md can certainly work.
My advice if he goes, stay on as little as he can get by on, and once he gets his life back in order immediately begin to plan his escape so to speak.
This is from my experince......
Others may have different opinions

The fact that he wont pay for a second month is a blessing in disguise.

Methadone is notorious for being one of the hardest opiates to withdraw from(WDs last more that heroin, alot off ppl switch from done->bupe) and for me,its questionable if a 9 month addiction deserves a methadone treatment.
Dont get me wrong, any addiction needs balls to overcome, but with just 9months under his belt OP could try something less "drastic" like a quick bupe taper, detox with OTC meds or even cold turkey for that matter.

It would be a pity to trade a 9months H habit with a decade or so of methadone addiction..
