I have a question for you guys...I'm pretty sure i know the answer already but I figured I would bring it up.

I have been back on bupe for 228 days, basically 7.5 months, and I have tapered down to 1mg a day (sublingual)... I went to treatment and did extensive recovery, along with alot of aa / na meetings. Done sets of steps and other work, etc.

Now my question is this, the whole 228 days has been clean and sober time as well. Do you all think it would be a bad idea to take a little sniff of bupe every now and then? I could see how people would look at this of abuse of meds and a relapse warning sign, etc....

Thoughts?

Mods - I posted in OD because I viewed relapse prevention as harm reduction, please move if you feel the need.

I do think it would be a bad idea because its almost twice as potent with much faster onset ofcourse and you will likely be tempted to keep snoting the bupe for the BA. This is coming from someone who started at 20 mg a day from a bad methadone addiction and when i got down to about 2 mg started snorting it. I have now tapered down to .5 mg every other day and i cant stop snorting it because i already feel like shit and because of snorting it im having an extremely difficult time stopping and tapering further.
So my answer is do not do it if you are serious about quiting the bupe. I hope this makes sense because right now its hard for me to tell..

^ thanks for the response but this is not what im talking about... I would be maintaing my regular use of bupe, and wouldnt be worried about blood levels , tapering and quitting...etc...

it would be an on occasion thing for a little buzz to be completely honest.

Well if you can for sure keep it an occasional thing then i guess its ok but like i said i dont think its a good idea unless you cut your dose way back. Even then you may not want to go back to sublingual because of the quicker onset and the somewhat "rush" type feeling. If you dont go back to sublingual then it will be much harder to quit and also IMO it doesnt last quite as long. You may find yourself wanting to snort it to feel better faster,

ill be dosing my sub every day SL still.... this is in regards to being honest is sobriety

As youve been maintaining for so long, Id say using more than you need is a warning sign, if not a step in the wrong direction.

This is how the snowball starts gaining momentum.

If I were in your shoes Id be preparing to get off the MT, not adding to it.

Good luck and think twice.

i mean if youre ON suboxone, youre not clean. so i dont see a point.

Ditto.

You can count those days as sober all you want, the fact is you are not. And if you are still searching for a buzz, you will be back to square one sooner rather then later.

I know a guy who quit and can now manage getting a buzz from mild opiate use every few months. He was clean for 6 years though before ever attempting it! You are kidding your self if you think that you have achieved sobriety and are now ready to control your habit.

No offence, I am just trying to give you the cold harsh truth of the matter.

The debate about whether one is "sober" if on suboxone isn't really the issue here... I mean, that's a whole separate topic that actually might be something interesting to discuss over in Drug Culture. I know there are people who don't view it as being truly clean, and I guess it isn't being clean technically but.. if you take it like you are supposed to, it's no different than being on an antibiotic or something you were prescribed to treat some other illness and people don't view them as not sober. At least that's how I view it.

Anyway, the real issue here OP is you trying and seek out a high from it. You know that's a bad sign.. I don't have to tell you. Hah. It's the continuation of a bad pattern of behavior.. the same behavior that led you to have to get on suboxone to begin with, know what I mean? It's a slippery slope and the line definitely can start to get a bit blurry but to me, if you start doing that... using your meds for other than the intended purpose, you are definitely no longer "sober".

Be careful... I'm sure you know very well how this kind of thinking can develop and turn into a big problem.

Edit: I made a thread over in DC (link) to discuss the issue of if one is truly sober if on suboxone, in case anyone is interested and wants to carry on that specific discussion over there.

Very well said, I was just going to say the exact same thing, (although you probably put it more eloquently ;)).
I second this.
