I'm taking this idea from another website I used to visit often. They had a Recommended Music List (RML). Anyway, since I don't like the techno crap all you BLers listen to:p and I am running low on books to read, I think this thread could be a great tool. A list will be compiled in this first post, periodically updated once there are enough recommendations, of the books recommended by BLers. The rankings will be based on total number of votes per book, so in this case it would not be redundant to reiterate another BLer's sentiment.

If anyone has a better suggestion on how organize the list, that is fine. Also, if the thread is a success and I don't update enough, I'd encourage a mod to do it.

to start, I'll name a few:

On The Road, keruouac
East of Eden, steinbeck
The Sex Lives of Cannibals, l marten troost
Naked, david sedaris
The Outsiders, hinton
Siddhartha, hesse
Breakfast of Champions, vonnegut

You know... We've got a whole forum for the exact purpose of discussing music that isn't techno crap

This is certainly not the worst way to develop a reading list, but that's not because its a good one. You're speaking to a bunch of people who think that speedballing is cool as long as you wake up in time to pay the water bill. The best book recommendations for me have always come from people who actually know me, whose opinions I actually respect.

The rankings will be based on total number of votes per book, so in this case it would not be redundant to reiterate another BLer's sentiment.

This sentence actually makes the last sentence sound like a sound idea. Have fun reading through the books that were on high school and undergrad college reading lists across America. Let me know is Lord of the Flies and Isle of the Blue Dolphin were worth your time. This is like deciding on which contact lens prescription is right for you based on its popularity.

If you like Sedaris, check out his earlier stuff. I've always liked me talk pretty one day. Also look into Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs, or Don't get too Comfortable.

If you like Siddhartha, read other Hesse, or whatever the introduction to Buddhism text is at your local college. Most people find out they just liked reading about the Buddha.

If you like On the Road, read Burroughs.

But srsly:

this is as far as i read up till now, but +1 allot for bukowski.

now im going to continue reading this thread.

but if you like interesting and intellectually provoking novels check out Neil Stephenson, of his i have read Quicksilver and Cryptinomicon. also, Pat Conroy is pretty damn good. also the guy who wrote Hawaii is fucking awesome.

umm, ive read allot of books and when i get around to it i will post a proper list of some of my favorites. those just happened to be recent and easy to recall.

oh man, also the book Trinity by Leon Uris is reeaaally good.

damn, i missed atlas' thread... well, all i have to say is :p

yea but your right... i mean how in the hell could anyone who likes to get fucked up and bomb out on some drugs be well read? and forget all those stupid fucks who take psychedelics. god, they try so hard to sound sooo intellectual but really are completely incapable of reading, which is kind of ironic, dont ya think?
oh wait.... :p

The entire Sherlock Holmes collection is well worth reading... your local library should have it all collected in 2 or 3 volumes. did you know that Holmes occasionally injected cocaine? He would have possibly been a bluelighter in this day and age :p if anyone else can recommend good Victorian-era mystery classics, I would appreciate it :)

I started doing that once (taking the list from the multiple "what are you reading" and "name your favourite book" threads that have been posted here already). I got bored really quickly. But if you want to do it, by all means go ahead :)

I gotta say: I am far more likely to take my recommendations from a couple of people. Those who I know have intelligent opinions about books and stuff; and those who I know like some of the same books that I do. The mere fact that someone on this board likes book x is unlikely to make me want to read it. OTOH, if I know someone likes Wallace and Pynchon and Stephenson and Dick and De Dillo, and they tell me to read Gaddis or Vollman, I might just listen.

Maybe if you also include the names of the BLers who've recommended each book, it would be more useful :)

I'm not typing out, but if you look at http://www.librarything.com/catalog.php?view=SimonChamberlain you can see some stuff that I've been reading.

Ya, srsly. Right now, there's no reason not to pick up Infinite Jest. Since it's the 10th Anniversary you can buy it at your local bookstore for only $10!

My other initial reccomendation has to involve the love of my life:

We should have threads for book reviews, so you can write a report explaining why you recommend a certain book.
