anyhow check out The Dice Man by Luke Rhinehart. AWESOME book.

OK, me give serious recommendations:

Anything by David Simon - Homicide or The Corner. Awesome investigative journalism, the stories of a whole year spent (respectively) with the Baltimore Homicide unit and on a Baltimore street corner where drug dealers gather. Simply brilliant. The guy went on to write the TV series Homicide - Life on the Streets and The Wire.

Snow Crash - Neal Stephenson
I know he has already been mentioned in this thread but they didn't list the best book he's written. But seriously, if you like CyberPunk and haven't read this, you can't really call yourself a CyberPunk fan. The actual book moves quickly, keeps the elements of science and intellectual-based plot outlines as is with the laws of Sci-Fi yet achieves the very difficult task of developing characters that the reader cares about. Trust me. It's a good book.

The Left Hand of Darkness (LHOD) - Ursula K. Le Guin
Mix together the absence of gender, with a mysterious planet bursting with Wintery imagery, moments of intense man vs. nature, and a confusing geo-political war and you get LHOD (sort of). This is by far one of my favorite Science Fiction books because it takes on (and achieves) a perspective rarely presented throughout the Sci-Fi I've read: complete equality between men and women. Even if you're not a feminist, even if you hate feminism it's still strictly sci-fi and completely enjoyable.

yeah, i just keep coming back to it. i like it more than most of his other stuff, but i haven't read 'identity' yet.

I haven't read them all but I wrote about a couple for my degree at university. "Stars of the New Curfew" is a collection of short stories of his that really blew me away, and "Incidents at the Shrine" also has a couple of incredibly powerful stories in it (though perhaps that's because I only read "The Famished Road" afterwards). I love magical realism, and it was through Okri that I discovered it.
