Been watching a lot of films lately. When I go through GBL binges I tend to just sit around watching movies all the time...
Bad Lieutenant: Port of New Orleans is pretty good, has an ambiguous ending. Nic Cage back to his better ways. Frailty is another fairly good film but nothing special, I saw one of the main twists coming a mile off. Probably the only film I've ever seen Matthew Mcconaughey put in a good performance too. Dawn of the Dead remake - pretty mixed views on that. I quite like the whole fast zombie thing, when there's a lot of tension and chasing. But I can't remember ever really being remotely scared or surprised at what was happening. Watched Kick-Ass the other day. not sure what to say about it really. Traditionally what I consider to be humour is witty, understated type comedy seen in TV shows like Alan Partridge, Peep Show and The Office. This rarely seems to appear in comedy on the big screen, with humour always being very obvious. It has to appeal to the mass market I guess. Anyway Kick-Ass has the whole crude Superbad style of humour that's become synonymous with hollywood comedy. If you don't really expect much out of it you might love it. I doubt I'll ever watch it again. All these comedies often seem to involve the same actors and Judd Apatow seems to regularly have a hand in them, which is odd because he made the show Freaks and Geeks which was hilarious. It's not to say that simple humour isn't funny. A lot of the jokes in the TV show South Park for example are obvious and basic but they're still clever. Very rarely is any comedy in mainstream movies clever.
Shutter's Island is another I saw recently. The story is quite surreal but I like that and it's very spooky and mysterious.
