Avalon
Avalonenpolognetheatricalpolish.png

The film is set in a bleak future, where the population is hooked on an immersive illegal virtual reality video game called Avalon. Despite its popularity the game can be deadly, leaving players' bodies catatonic in the real world. One player of the game, Ash (played by Polish actress Małgorzata Foremniak), hears of a secret level hidden within Avalon. The film follows her quest to find the level.

The film's colour palette is mainly sepia tones, helping to blur the line between the real world and that within the game itself.

The film is typically Mamoru Oshii styled in its pacing and editing. It is relatively slow paced, reinforcing the mundane nature of the world Ash lives in and highlighting the excitement of playing the game. The film superfluously features a basset hound, a breed of dog common in Oshii's films, since he has one, named Gabriel.

The film's score is by regular Oshii collaborator, Kenji Kawai.

Bloke who did "Ghost in the Shell" and his first feature film. Very.Fucking.Good ;)

Change the word 'movies' to 'films' in the thread title, we are not Americans.

Lovefilm / the post seem to be taking ages to get new DVDs to me, the bastards!

I saw Public Enemies in the cinema the other day, best film ive seen in ages!

The Feds try to take down notorious American gangsters John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd during a booming crime wave in the 1930s

The difficult 1930s is a time of robbers who knock over banks and other rich targets with alarming frequency. Of them, none is more notorious than John Dillinger, whose gang plies its trade with cunning efficiency against big businesses while leaving ordinary citizens alone. As Dillinger becomes a folk hero, FBI head J. Edger Hoover is determined to stop his ilk by assigning ace agent Melvin Purvis to hunt down Dillinger. As Purvis struggles with the manhunt's realities, Dillinger himself faces an ominous future with the loss of friends, dwindling options and a changing world of organized crime with no room for him. Well i enjoyed it, so did everyone else i know whos seen it. Why dont you make your own mind up and go and watch it?

brokenbrain - I really enjoyed it without feeling that it was too childish to be honest. I'm a bit of a Ghibli lover though.

I kept seeing things like the pirates destroying the overhead railway line and thinking that was a really dangerous thing and someone would get hurt...and who was going to put it back together:\
ps I'm talking about laputa not ponyo...haven't seen any made this century, haven't watched spirited away because I don't like the look of that big round witchy hag creature.

Spirited Away is really good. :)

Because I don't watch blatent, made for the masses, Hollywood nonsense and by all accounts the film is shit. I can tell by the trailers that it's EVERYTHING that's wrong with film.

If anyone wants to watch a good gangster film then, Mesrine should do the trick. :)

Like Spade, I really recommend you brace the witchy hag and check it out :) All of Hayao Miyazaki's and Isao Takahata's work are utterly fantastic, without exception.
I "Obtained" Pom Poko the other day and was so happy to watch it again :)
Porco Rosso, also fantastic. So funny too ^_^
Grave of the Fireflies is different, much slower and more character involved, but again amazing.

spade you deliberately decide you don't like films because they are "made for the masses". you are just as bad as someone who says they don't like a film because it has subtitles.

although i do agree with you on this. mesrine is a fucking excellent film

No I just genuinely don't like any of those mindless Hollywood films made for simple folk who don't like real films.

I watched Laputa : Castle in the sky last week.

I first saw that movie on the TV when i was about 9 years old. I remembered the movie until i got the chance to see it again aged 20 a few years back and enjoyed it as much the second time around.

There aren't many movies i can remember watching from back when i was 9.

If you like that kind of stuff i'd recomend Porco Rosso.
