I am looking for a horrifying horror novel.

Books I've read that have frightened me on another level:

1.) The Shining

Can't think of any others...

The Hot Zone
by Richard Preston

all about ebola, a horrifying virus. all true and factual as well which is even scarier. to read about what this virus does to a human body. terrifying. didnt help that i read it when i was 12...

I also read that when I was about 12.. weird. Very good novel, and yes - pretty disturbing especially at that age.

Not exactly scary, but definately disturbing and thought provoking- Nick Cave's And The Ass Saw The Angel'. Surprised the hell out of me when I learnt he was a writer, and apparently translated into seventeen languages.

"Phantoms" by Dean Koontz, which is the scariest novel I've read by him so far (I'm a Koontz neophyte, though). For suspense I'd recommend his "Mr. Murder", which raced along at breakneck speed.

Hahah they killed him in Southpark.

Anyways, there really never been anything I read that scared me more than the news.

I've read a lot of Stephen King and Dean Koontz. Koontz has been great in that he keeps your attention and you never feel like things are slowing down or going off in weird directions. But to be honest, it doesn't scare me. Most of the Stephen King has entertained me more than scaring me, as well. That said, one book that has scared me for life is Stephen King's "IT". It helps if you haven't seen the movie, because your mind can create much better images and interpretations of what is being read, but to this day I can't walk near sewer drains, and I often stare at pictures longer than I should...waiting for them to move. Some of his short stories have had a similar impact on me, but very few - as I said, most of them were just 'cool' and entertaining.

As for the "Hot Zone", I read that, and wasn't really scared. I suppose the big fear factor in that is how close it is to reality. Koontz stuff could happen, for the most part, but he usually ties in enough make believe to where you don't sweat it. King is all about the not-even-possible stuff. If you want things that are possible, or closer to reality, we can probably drum up some recommendations along those lines.

I assume you're going for more 'scare' than 'cool entertainment.' Is this correct?

House of Leaves By Mark Z Danielewski.

One of the scariest, most enigmatic books i have ever read. Also one of my favourites.

Probably the scariest *story* I've read was Orson Scott Card's "Eumenides in the Fourth Story Lavatory." A short, but bizarre and disgusting story that just never leaves you. I think I stopped reading that anthology after that story. :P

Pet Sematary by Stephen King.....his only book to truly scare the bejesus out of me while reading it at night before sleeping. Another one is Intensity by Dean Koontz....one of my favorite suspense thriller authors . Try it and tell me!

Another one that was unintentionally scary was Man Crazy by Joyce Carol Oates ...an unexpected mind fuck.

Try some of H.P. Lovecraft's work.

I don't see the big deal about this guy. I read a collection of his short stories, and given that they are very dated, I found them to be boring, poorly written, and completely unscary.

Hmm.. I recommend Camp Concentration, by Thomas Disch. Its been a long time, but I remember being scared by that book.

I thought American Psycho was pretty scary, considering it made me want to kill people.

^ you would.

I am a horror purist, so I love Richard Matheson...

Robert Neville is the last living man on Earth . . . but he is not alone. Every other man, woman, and child has become a vampire, and they are all hungry for Neville's blood.

By day, he is the hunter, stalking the sleeping undead through the abandoned ruins of civilization. By night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for the dawn.

How long can one man survive in a world full of vampires?

I Am Legend has been filmed as The Last Man on Earth starring Vincent Price (1964) and The Omega Man starring Charlton Heston (1971). This volume contains the complete novel plus several more unforgettable tales by Richard Matheson.

I was just going to recommend this book. Most of the stuff this author works on is pretty great and while it's not outright SCARY, it sure is dark and creepy. Very cool.

I just read his new one, "Lunar Park," and to be honest I was really scared a lot while reading it.

It is his first attempt (as far as I know) at writing a supernatural horror novel. It goes over really strangely. Two of my friends read it at the same time I did and we had some pretty interesting conversations about it. Well, probably not interesting to other people, but you know... It's worth a read. Nothing phenomenal, though.
