Recomended books on Buddhism?

Anyways:
I like this guy's work:
Stephen Mitchell.

Starts off with someone 'blowing smoke'....I guess we (some of us here) can appreciate that....

P.S. Alan Watts always left me dry...no offense. Same with 'Baba Ram Das' ....
Who had a much more 'varied' lifestyle and a decent documentary made about him...

Quite a difficult subject to put into words, but Alan Watts and Joseph Cambpell seem to do an exceptional job bringing an eastern concept into a western frame. I've discovered Buddhism requires a great deal of practice and discipline. Researching will only take you so far and from an intellectual standpoint, Buddhism is very similar to existentialism or nihilism.

A Buddhist bible by Dwight Goddard has a lot of different essential Buddhist texts wrapped up together and some non Buddhist ones like the tao which will still help you understand Buddhism. Or just look up the Diamond and Heart sutra online and read them to see what you think. I lean towards Zen however.

Personally I would say to stay away from tibetan Buddhism as they are like the Catholic church of Buddhism, but no offense to those that go that way I just prefer the philosophical aspects of Buddhism.

Texts are useful, but I agree...at a certain point you just need to do the hard work of meditation...
Same thing with any religion. all the book reading in the world is just a finger pointing at the moon.

Foreigner: do you avoid writing in the 1st person because you wish to con other people into thinking that you are 'enlightened'?

I never claimed I'm enlightened - far from it. I'm simply saying that you are not. It's not that difficult to understand.

I wasn't insulting you before but now I will, just so that you're clear on what an insult actually is. I'm nowhere near the level of the Buddha but I can still tell you what enlightenment is not, and it's not a whiny, preachy asshole with a holy book stuck up his tight ass and an ego with a God complex.

For a Golden Wheel-Turning Bodhisattva of Eastern Light, fixingahole sure does delete a lot of his posts (most of which are filled up to here with a puritanical vitriol to rival those megachurch televangelists). 8)

Please check the BLUA

So when someone deletes a post on bluelight it is not actually deleted?
that is correct. the post is removed from sight but can still be seen by certain staff.
Why are 'deleted' posts retained by the administration staff?
as an audit trail.
The forum rules state very clearly that a person may delete their posts and that they shall be deleted forever.
which forum rules? can you please provide a link to the rules to which you refer.
For what purpose does bluelight retain deleted posts, and with whom are they shared (moderators, evidently)?
'deleted' posts can be seen by the staff of the forum in which they were originally created, as well as senior staff.
Are deleted private messages also retained and readable by the administrators and moderators?
no. none of your private messages - deleted or not - can be seen by administrators and moderators.
Please can an administrator answer this as it is a betrayal of trust.
betrayal of trust? how so?

bluelight spans a number of geographies and, hence, legal systems so it would be confusing and complex to see this testing in a legal way. i'll say, very generally, that as the author of your posts, copyright of that material is your automatic right from the moment you record it. however, in posting it on bluelight, you also accepted our right to publish, edit or delete the content as we see fit. if you're not happy with that arrangement, you should stop posting new content on bluelight immediately.

It seems that moderators can read deleted private messages too...
absolutely incorrect.
What private investigators are used by bluelight, and for what purpose? What government agencies receive the collected information?
it says "may". not "does" or "will". as far as i know, it's never happened to date.
