Recently prescibed dexedrine for add

Hey everyone,

I was scripted Dexedrine Ir 5 mg tabs for add and I am in univeristy. For my first day I suppose to take 1 tab, then the next day I'm taking two and I have to call the doctor to see how it works.

He is slowly increasing my dose so that I am taking 25 mg throughout the day after I've been on dex for seven days. Seems like a lot to me though?

What are your thoughts on this?

The maximum dose usually prescribed is 40mg a day, often however a psychiatrist will increase from that at their own discretion.

It does seem to be rather high to move you straight to 25mg... Obviously however your doctor has his reasons.
 
ok thanks, just so I know though how much does 25mg dex equal in terms of adderall?

The doc also said he will move me to vyvanse if this works well for me...
 
i know this question won't help you, sorry for that, but do you live in the US or Canada or some other place?

Okay, I have the answer (if my calculations are correct), if anyone wants to know.

First, I looked on the web and found out that 10mg of Adderall contains, when the other components of the salts are removed, 6.3mg of amphetamine (there was a nice chart on some site).

Then, since that’s ‘amphetamine’ base it includes the l-amp, so we have to multiply by 0.75 to get the amount of dextroamphetamine base, which means that 10mg of Adderall contains roughly 4.73mg of d-amp.

Next, since I couldn’t find the equivalent of amphetamine base for Dexedrine, I decided to try to figure it out for myself. I looked up the molecular weights of amphetamine and sulfuric acid and found them to be 135.21 and 98.07. But there’s two amp molecules attached to the sulfate, making the total molecular weight 368.49. Taking a percentage (73.4) we find that the total dextroamphetamine in 10mg of Dexedrine is roughly 7.34mg.

So, if we’re ignoring l-amp we have 1mg Dexedrine=1.55mg Adderall (which if we round to 1:1.5 it makes conversions nice and easy).

So my 25mg Adderall is equal to roughly 16.13mg Dexedrine. So it should be just slightly stronger than the 15mg Dexedrines I was taking before, plus anything that the l-amp gives to it.

And I did all this on Adderall--instead of saying 'eh, whatever.' I think the Adderall is, in fact, working quite nicely (although I kinda miss the greater speediness of the Dexedrine, even though it’s probably better that I don’t have it). One drawback is that it's a good bit more expensive than Dexedrine, and my health plan with school only covers 80% of prescription drug costs, so I have to fork over the other 20% for this and the other drugs I'm taking.

I thought the ratio was roughly 0.75 mg Dexedrine = 1 mg Adderall or "1 mg Dexedrine = 1.33 mg Adderall"

Your ratio makes Dexedrine even more stronger.
 
I found the first day on Dexedrine IR 5 mg quite effective as I was much more focused on tasks. It lasted quite long though and not sure if increasing the dose like the doctor said would be the right direction to take. I am suppose to double my dose tomorrow and then triple the day after.
I also noticed a small headache when it was wearing off.... any reasons why this might be happening? I am drinking enough water so thats not the problem.
 
I take dexedrine daily at 15 mg E 2 times daily. Also 15 mg IR dexedrine 3 times daily. It's true - most start low and increase if/as needed.

I often got a headache at the end of the day or when they wore of (the first months when just starting it. I know many others that get them as well (w/ dehydration not an issue-no more than slightly) so perhaps it is just a common side effect.
 
If you need stimulation physically as well as mentally, would Adderall be better than Dex?
 
^^ I would think so. With the addition of l-amphetamine, you will have some more noradrenergic reuptake inhibition.
 
Yea that person probably had a high tolerance.

I think I need to ask the doc for Dexedrine ER because the IR versions are giving me headaches on comedowns.

Other than some chest pains the Dex is working great because I'm so focused now.
